A Virtual World Grammar for automatic generation of virtual worlds

Abstract: Hybrid systems such as those that combine 3D virtual worlds and organization based multiagent systems add new visual and communication features for multi-user applications. The design of such hybrid and dynamic systems is a challenging task. In this paper we propose a system that can automatically generate a 3D virtual world (VW) from an organization based multiagent system (MAS) specification that establishes the activities participants can engage on. Both shape grammar and virtual world paradigms inspired us… Show more

“…They have been successfully applied in different solutions that require the use of virtual models/environments (Lee et al, 2008a;Attene et al, 2009;Hunter and Gerber, 2010) to achieve a wide variety of purposes that range from the planning of neurosurgery operation to the cataloguing of museum artefacts. A few procedural modelling solutions also used them to guide the process of generating virtual models (Liu et al, 2008;Trescak et al, 2010;Tutenel et al, 2011). The results are interesting.…”

“…A subset of these works also relies on ontologies and semantics (e.g. Trescak et al (2010), Liu et al (2006), Liu et al (2008)), which are knowledge organization based approaches that contributed, along with procedural modelling, to the methodology proposed in this document. Thus, the following subsections will expose a literature review regarding both matters.…”

“…[91] Virtual World Builder Toolkit (VWBT) is an extension of the EI/EIDE framework to design and implement 3-D virtual (electronic institutions) institutions; this paper implements the toolkit with an immersive version of a fish market, along the ideas proposed in [21]. [20] Simulation of an archaeological site as a normative multi agent system using 3D virtual institutions.…”

“…In [20,21] a system that can automatically generate a 3D virtual world from a MAS specification is proposed. They present the concept of Virtual World Grammar (VWG) that supports the generation of 3D virtual worlds, through the extension of the shape grammar concept, adding semantic information of the environment and the MAS.…”

“…Our proposal has some points in common with [20,21]. We propose a grammatical framework to construct VWs and we also extend its features to add semantic information.…”
