A virtual testbed for characterizing synchronous generators based on time domain tests

Abstract

Characterization of synchronous machine is a matter of interest for several investigators; various sizes of synchronous machines have been used, from fractional power to hundreds of MW. In this sense, different tests have been emerged and consequently their methodology to implement them. Those tests have different impact on the synchronous machine, since the excitation signal has a richness of excitation; the viewpoint is that the response signal has the ability to excite the machine time constants. Thus different tests can obtain a different parameter set from the system. This work is about programming LabVIEW™ as a function generator to acquire experimental data and to determine a set of parameter for a 7 kVA salient-pole synchronous generator and to carry out its spectral analysis in order to determine richness of response signal excitation.
