This article presents a literature review on rainwater usage in buildings in Brazil. It focuses on economic, environmental and social impacts. The legislation related to rainwater harvesting-including the cities that have made such a practice mandatory-was also assessed. The literature review was based on a search strategy that uses protocols to find and select studies about the main subject, i.e., rainwater harvesting in buildings. The protocols were defined as the site to be investigated (buildings), the intervention (rainwater harvesting), and the expected result (influence on the potable water consumption). Despite the variation of water availability in the country, it was concluded that there is a high potential for potable water savings when using rainwater in buildings in Brazil. Finally, it was observed the need for financial investments in experimental research and innovation technologies in order to improve rainwater management.

Nowadays, available water resources face severe pressures due to demographic, economic, social causes, environmental degradation, climate change, and technological changes on a global scale. It is well known that rainwater harvesting, a simple and old method, has the potential to supplement surface and groundwater resources in areas that have inadequate water supply. In recent decades, many countries have supported the updated implementation of such a practice to confront the water demand increase and to reduce the frequency, peak, and volume of urban runoff. These considerations motivate interest in examining the current situation and the prospect of further development of this method worldwide. The present paper aims at the investigation of the current situation of rainwater harvesting (RWH) as an alternative water source to confront water scarcity in various countries around the world. In particular, the paper presents the following: (a) the causes of water shortage; (b) a concise historical overview of the temporal development of the RWH method; (c) the evolution of the concept of RWH; (d) the efforts to renew interest in RWH; and (e) incentives and perspectives for the spreading of the RWH method in various countries worldwide.

A busca por fontes alternativas e o uso racional de água são tendências em todo o mundo. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a implantação de reservatórios para armazenamento de água de chuva em dois edifícios (unidades 1 e 2) na Universidade Federal de Itajubá, Campus Itabira, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram definidos cenários para construção de reservatórios de diferentes volumes por meio do Método da Simulação. A demanda de água não potável foi estimada a partir da conversão da população flutuante em população permanente equivalente, dos hábitos de consumo em cada edifício e da vazão específica dos equipamentos hidrossanitários. Foram definidos índices técnicos como eficiência do sistema, confiança e atendimento à demanda de água não potável. Além disso, o período de retorno do investimento e o valor presente líquido (VPL) foram obtidos. Os resultados mostraram que os reservatórios de 5 m³ e 15 m³ apresentaram maior VPL em 15 anos, sendo de R$ 27.076,03 e R$ 44.493,57 com período de retorno de 1,2 e 2,4 anos, nas unidades 1 e 2, respectivamente. Para esses reservatórios, a porcentagem da demanda atendida foi de 87% e 72% com confiança do sistema de 75% e 58%, para as unidades 1 e 2, respectivamente. A partir da análise de sensibilidade observou-se que a tarifa de água foi o fator que mais influenciou o VPL, representando uma ferramenta para incentivo a ampliação da adoção da prática. Este estudo pode contribuir para a implementação do aproveitamento de água de chuva no Campus de Itabira e em outras instituições públicas.
