A Versatile Out-of-Band Software-Defined Networking Solution for the Internet of Things

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is gradually incorporating multiple environmental, people, or industrial monitoring deployments with diverse communication and application requirements. The main routing protocols used in the IoT, such as the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), are focusing on the many-to-one communication of resource-constraint devices over wireless multi-hop topologies, i.e., due to their legacy of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The Software-Defined Networking (SDN)… Show more

“…This synchronous flooding (SF) architecture dynamically sets up SF protocols to provide reliable and low-latency performance when complex SDN control requirements are needed. In [54], a novel SDN architecture named VERO-SDN proposes a programmable routing control, a modular SDN controller, and an OpenFlow-like protocol. The approach of this architecture is to get reduced control overhead in long-range control channels and improve the communication quality in IoT scenarios with a wide range of coverage.…”

“…On the other hand, the improvement of smartness in WSN motes, enhance the applicability of WSN in various emergency and monitoring purposes through the Internet of Things (IoT). The communication performance of WSN is further improved through VERO-SDN: a software defines WSN for various IoT application [150]. SDN is designed to handle the various issues of IoT services; by reducing the complexity of IoT services, it helps establish an efficient emergency service provider [151].…”
