A verbal response model of assertiveness.

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of a verbal response model of assertiveness with nonassertive college female nursing students. The model is composed of three verbal components presented in a systematic training program. Twenty-five subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: the assertive training group (n = 7), the attention control group (n = 7), and the no-treatment control group (n = 11). The assertive training group learned and practiced the model. All groups were posttested on a selfreport scale,… Show more

“…All statements were identical to the ones used in [47], however three statements (Statement 14, 15, 16) were merged into one, as this was more suitable for this context. Moreover, five statements (Statements 10, 12,16,18,22) were added to evaluate specific elements of the training, such as the voice analysis. A complete list of all the statements used within this evaluation can be found in Appendix C. Moreover, participants were given the opportunity to write down remarks after each question if they wanted to further elaborate on their rating further.…”

“…Power-base training consists of three 2hour training sessions conducted over a 3-week period with university students. A verbal-response model is utilized as it has been found to be an effective method of teaching behavioral skills (Winship & Kelley, 1976;Mehnert, 1974). On the basis of interpersonal skills training research, the following behavioral techniques are employed: behavioral rehearsal, feedback, modeling, coaching, and in vivo practice (Rathus, 1972;Young, Rimm & Kennedy, 1973;Heimberg, Montgomery, Madsen & Heimberg, 1977).…”
