A Variable Neighborhood Search Algorithm for the Leather Nesting Problem

Abstract: The leather nesting problem is a cutting and packing optimization problem that consists in finding the best layout for a set of irregular pieces within a natural leather hide with an irregular surface and contour. In this paper, we address a real application of this problem related to the production of car seats in the automotive industry. The high quality requirements imposed on these products combined with the heterogeneity of the leather hides make the problem very complex to solve in practice. Very few res… Show more

“…VNS was initially proposed by Mladenović et al [7,8]. Nowadays, a large number of successful VNS applications have been reported in a wide range of areas [9][10][11][12][13]. In this work, a Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND) heuristic schema was applied in base game's RTP and it takes all symbols into account.…”

“…However, the use of the synthetic one combined with paraffin oil was more effective and cheaper.Artificial leather is generally a coated textile substrate made by covering a textile fabric base with a soft polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer. This leather-like fabric is used in many industries such as clothing, footwear, automotive and upholstery and it is increasingly demanded to substitute natural leather which is costly and available in irregular pieces [1].Certainly, leather-like materials are cost effective, more versatile and animal-friendly. However, both PU and PVC artificial leather have commonly been associated with an unpleasant chemical odor, which comes out during the coating at high temperature, from evolved volatile organic compounds like hydrogen chloride, substituted benzenes, aldehydes and phthalic anhydride [2-4].…”

“…To improve the solution, items can be rotated and/or translated from their initial position. Alves et al (2012b) solved the problem of cutting leather parts for the automotive industry. In Alves et al (2012b), they searched for the maximization of the occupancy of a single plate.…”
