A Variable-Dimension Overtube for Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery

Abstract: In natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, the insertion of surgical instruments can cause patient discomfort, even bleeding and perforation. This paper proposes a design of an overtube which can vary its radial dimension. It can be inserted through the natural orifice in a small diameter configuration and then enlarge its size and form a hollow and rigid channel to allow passing instruments, while to reduce the friction between the instruments and the surrounding tissue. A Bricard linkage is used as … Show more

“…Therefore, the research on the tribological properties of the interface is particularly important. The current research methods mainly include finite element analysis and in vitro experimental methods [172,173]. The digestive tract and the endoscope are usually simplified into a twodimensional axisymmetric structure in finite element models.…”

“…Recently, healthcare has become a hot research topic wherein medical treatments with the emerging 5G networks are combined together, leading to the high performance and precise treatment of disease [3]. In the current-day remedy procedure, various data have been collected from the human body through biomedical devices and sent to doctors through intelligent systems to analyze the diseases or to monitor the evolution of a recovery-all this in contrast to the conventional scenario, wherein doctors could make a decision with regard to determining the disease how the patient should be treated, as described in [4,5]. Biomedical devices can be on-body, off-body, and in-body depending on the medical application types where the in-body model includes implanted devices and on-body with off-body species are external devices for monitoring and controlling health issues [6,7].…”

“…Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is a new surgical method that has been studied in recent years. In this type of surgery, surgical tools such as forceps and scissors can be inserted through the mouth, anus, nose, vagina, and urethra [1][2][3]. Compared with minimally invasive surgery (MIS), NOTES involves less pain, less fear, and faster recovery time, because it is incisionless.…”
