A validated calculator to estimate risk of cesarean after an induction of labor with an unfavorable cervix

Abstract: A nomogram and user-friendly Web-based calculator that incorporates 5 variables known at the start of induction has been developed and validated. It can be found at: http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/obgyn/labor-induction-calculator/. This calculator can be used to augment patient counseling for women undergoing an induction with an unfavorable cervix.

“…Moreover, Navve et al (28) reported that IOL in multiparous women is safe and successful regardless of the initial BS and Prado et al (35) found increased parity, increases the chance of achieving a successful VD. Recently, in a similar trial, Levine et al (3) documented that in multivariable modeling, nulliparity, BMI at delivery, and height were significantly associated with CS.…”

“…On contrary to these data, Silva et al (22) and Garba et al (23) found higher Bishop scores were the best predictors of successful misoprostol IOL. However, Levine et al (3) documented that modified Bishop score was significantly associated with CS.…”

“…Caesarean section is associated with short-term and long-term complications such as postpartum haemorrhage, morbid adherence of placenta, and uterine rupture in future pregnancies [5][6][7] . Risk factors for Caesarean delivery after induction of labour include nulliparity, more advanced maternal age, greater body mass index, hypertension, and diabetes [8][9][10][11][12] . These risk factors have an overall predictive value around 70% 8,9 .…”

These risk factors have an overall predictive value around 70% 8,9 . This study aimed to determine risk factors for Caesarean section after induction of labour at term among nulliparous women in Hong Kong, and to develop and validate a predictive model to help counsel women at risk of Caesarean section.…”
