A Universal Parameter to Predict Subaerial Landslide Tsunamis?

Abstract: The significance of the impulse product parameter P is reviewed, which is believed to be the most universal parameter for subaerial landslide tsunami (impulse wave) prediction. This semi-empirical parameter is based on the streamwise slide momentum flux component and it was refined with a multiple regression laboratory data analysis. Empirical equations based on P allow for a simple prediction of wave features under diverse conditions (landslides and ice masses, granular and block slides, etc.). Analytical evi… Show more

“…These dimensionless groups were formed to match the numbers used in previous studies [ Huber and Hager , ; Heller and Hager , ; Mohammed and Fritz , ; Heller and Hager , ] and so facilitate comparison. “…In other words, the dimension of the parameter space dropped from 8 to 2. This substantiates a long‐standing practice in the development of empirical equations for predicting impulse waves [ Huber and Hager , ; Vischer and Hager , ; Zweifel et al , ; Heller and Hager , , ]. Yet experiments told us a slightly different story.…”

“…The first generic 3D study was conducted by Huber (1980) This transformation method must be considered as an engineering approach rather than arising from a highly scientific basis. However, several real-world applications of Heller et al (2009) confirmed that this transformation method results in realistic predictions (Fuchs and Boes, 2010;Heller and Hager, 2014;Battaglia et al, 2015). (24) from Mohammed and Fritz (2012)].…”

“…Finally, while multilayered depth‐averaged models have been successfully applied to tsunamis generated by submarine landslides, they are unsuitable for modeling tsunamis generated by subaerial landslides, wherein the dominant wave‐generating mechanisms are due to longitudinal mass displacement and momentum exchange, not to vertical motion of the seafloor. [see Yavari‐Ramshe and Ataie‐Ashtiani , for an overview, and results from Fritz et al , , ; Okal and Synolakis , ; Heller and Hager , ; Heller , ; Xiao and Lin , , and others].…”
