A Unique Isolation of a Lytic Bacteriophage Infected Bacillus anthracis Isolate from Pafuri, South Africa

Abstract: Bacillus anthracis is a soil-borne, Gram-positive endospore-forming bacterium and the causative agent of anthrax. It is enzootic in Pafuri, Kruger National Park in South Africa. The bacterium is amplified in a wild ungulate host, which then becomes a source of infection to the next host upon its death. The exact mechanisms involving the onset (index case) and termination of an outbreak are poorly understood, in part due to a paucity of information about the soil-based component of the bacterium’s lifecycle. In… Show more

“…The change in these ecological and environmental cues could be responsible for the dominance of the A-clade lineages in recent decades, although this is merely speculative. The difference in isolated diversity between NCP and KNP can be attributed to the restrictions on animal movement and natural resources on the farms in NCP [11,28,29]. Each farm serves as its own outbreak site, perpetuating strains within the con nes of the farm's borders.…”

“…However, 37°C is the ideal temperature for growth [40]. After 24 h of incubation, B. anthracis on simple media will grow as large, prominent, graywhite, opaque, and uneven edges with a diameter of about 2-5 mm [41]. The colony's surface appears plumose hairy and fringed like curly hair when viewed under a microscope [42], which is known as hairlike curl, caput medusae, or fringelike edge.…”

“…National parks provide science in the form of Enlightenment scientia and dissemination. Indeed, the parks are a demesne of a famous new field of science -environmental science, covering current challenges from climate change to biodiversity conservation (Hassim & Lekota, 2024;Iknayan et al, 2022;Vukomanovic & Randall, 2021). Proper governance at the local level, as well as other directions, may help to expand these categories to all other humans and turn them into valuable natural heritage for themselves and their heirs.…”
