A unigene catalogue of 5700 expressed genes in cassava

Abstract: Two economically important characters, starch content and cassava bacterial blight resistance, were targeted to generate a large collection of cassava ESTs. Two libraries were constructed from cassava root tissues of varieties with high and low starch contents. Other libraries were constructed from plant tissues challenged by the pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv.manihotis. We report here the single pass sequencing of 11,954 cDNA clones from the 5' ends, including 111 from the 3' ends. Cluster analysis permit… Show more

“…Very little information is available about the protein coded by EG5651 in cassava or in any other plant species. This is not unexpected as Lopez et al (2004) were only able to assign likely biochemical function to 37% of unigenes in their study of 5,800 cassava unigenes. Furthermore, some 16% of their sequences showed no homology to known sequences and were thus likely to be cassavaspecific.…”

“…Two main approaches have been used: based on hybridization and sequencing. Cassava is one of the very few African staple food crop to which microarrays have been applied [31][32][33][34][35][36].…”

“…An initiative towards completing the saturation of the cassava genetic map has also resulted in the generation of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and SNPs. Several ESTs have been developed for cassava (Lopez et al, 2004;Lokko et al, 2007) with over 80,000 ESTs for cassava available in the Genbank. Over 1700 cassava SNPs are now available for molecular studies (Pablo et al, unpublished; Morag et al, unpublished).…”
