A Typical Metal‐Ion‐Responsive Color‐Tunable Emitting Insulated π‐Conjugated Polymer Film

Abstract: We report the synthesis of an insulated π-conjugated polymer containing 2,2'-bipyridine moieties as metal coordination sites. Metal coordination to the polymer enabled easy and reversible tuning of the luminescent color without changes to the main chain skeleton. The permethylated α-cyclodextrin (PM α-CD)-based insulation structure allowed the metalated polymers to demonstrate efficient emission even in the solid state, with identical spectral shapes to the dilute solutions. In addition, the coordination abili… Show more

“…Terao et al proposed an interesting method to tackle this issue. 25 They synthesized a α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) insulated CP containing 2,2′-bipyridine receptor (CP-5). The α-CD group with large steric hindrance restricted the close packing of polymer chains.…”

“…CD‐based polyrotaxanes of π‐conjugated polymers have been synthesized as “insulated molecular wires” , . Recently, Terao and colleagues, developed an efficient synthesis of CD‐based polyrotaxanes of π‐conjugated polymers by polymerization of self‐included π‐conjugated monomer through Glaser or Sonogashira coupling (Scheme ) , . This kind of insulated molecular wires exhibited stable and efficient emission properties.…”

“…36 More recently, such a one-pot Stille homopolymerization was applied in the synthesis of an insulated conjugated polymer. 42 However, compared to the vast number of the reported cases on the copolymerization between a dibrominated monomer with a diboronated or distannylated monomer, the examples for the one-pot Suzuki or Stille homopolymerization are quite limited. Apparently, not all dibrominated monomers are suitable for such a homopolymerization.…”
