A two–stage sequential allocation scheme for estimating the product of several means

Abstract: A two-stage sequential allocation scheme for estimating the product of the means of several independent populations under the squared error loss is proposed. The scheme specifies how a total of M observations can be allocated to the various populations in an optimal fashion, and yields, asymptotically as M -t m, a Bayes risk that is smaller than the risk obtained under the balanced design. 289

“…[2,5,9]. Actually, efficient designs are based on sequential procedures (two or three stage in a fixed or a Bayesian framework [1,3,7,8,10]). Reliability sequential schemes (R-SS) were applied successfully to series systems [6] when the total number of units to be tested T is fixed.…”

“…The random allocation was shown to be the best from numerical considerations; see, e.g., Terbeche (2000). Similarly, the problem of estimating the product of several means of independent populations, subject to the constraint of a total number of observations M fixed, was addressed by Rekab and Tahir (2000), using a two stage approach. The allocation of m i was nonrandom and the first order optimality was shown for large M. Suppose that X i has the distribution of the form…”
