Industry 4.0 is revolutionizing manufacturing processes and has a powerful impact on globalization by changing the workforce and increasing access to new skills and knowledge. World Economic Forum estimates that, by 2025, 50% of all employees will need reskilling due to adopting new technology. Five years from now, over two-thirds of skills considered important in today’s job requirements will change. A third of the essential skills in 2025 will consist of technology competencies not yet regarded as crucial to today's job requirements. In this study, we focus our discussion on the reskilling and upskilling of the future-ready workforce in the era of Industry 4.0 and beyond. We have delineated top skills sought by the industry to realize Industry 4.0 and presented a blueprint as a reference for people to learn and acquire new skills and knowledge. The findings of the study suggest that life-long learning should be part of an organization’s strategic goals. Both individuals and companies need to commit to reskilling and upskilling and make career development an essential phase of the future workforce. Great efforts should be taken to make these learning opportunities, such as reskilling and upskilling, accessible, available, and affordable to the workforce. This paper provides a unique perspective regarding a future-ready learning society as an essential integral of the vision of Industry 4.0.

The integration of blockchain technology into software development marks a paradigm shift, offering a new realm of possibilities alongside unique challenges. This paper delves into the multifaceted impact of blockchain on software development, exploring its potential to revolutionize the industry. Blockchain technology, at its core, is a decentralized ledger that records transactions across multiple computers in a way that ensures security, transparency, and immutability. The foundational principles of blockchain, including decentralization, consensus mechanisms, and cryptographic security, present a novel approach to addressing some of the longstanding challenges in software development. One of the most significant contributions of blockchain to software development is the enhancement of security and trust. Traditional centralized systems are often vulnerable to single points of failure, whereas blockchain’s decentralized nature inherently mitigates this risk. The immutable ledger ensures that once data is recorded, it cannot be altered without consensus, thereby fostering trust among users and developers. The concept of smart contracts, self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code, has opened new avenues in software development. These programmable contracts automate processes, reduce the need for intermediaries, and ensure the execution of agreements as intended. This automation is particularly beneficial in areas like supply chain management, where blockchain can provide transparency and traceability in software projects. Blockchain also introduces a paradigm shift in project management and collaboration. The transparent nature of blockchain can lead to more efficient project management, as all stakeholders have access to a single, unalterable version of project data. This transparency aids in collaborative coding and version control, ensuring that changes are tracked and authenticated. Moreover, blockchain can play a crucial role in protecting intellectual property and managing software licenses, providing a secure and transparent way to handle these aspects. The integration of blockchain with agile methodology presents a compelling synergy. Agile practices, which emphasize flexibility and iterative development, can benefit from blockchain’s ability to provide secure, transparent, and immutable records of project progress. This integration can enhance continuous integration and deployment processes, and provide a robust framework for agile project tracking. However, the adoption of blockchain in software development is not without challenges. Scalability issues, energy consumption, and the complexity of blockchain technology can pose significant barriers. Additionally, navigating the regulatory landscape and addressing ethical considerations, such as data privacy, are critical challenges that need to be addressed. Despite these challenges, the future of blockchain in software development is promising. Emerging trends indicate a growing convergence of blockchain with other technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and DevOps. The role of blockchain in facilitating machine-to-machine transactions and enhancing AI-driven applications is an area of active research. Similarly, the integration of blockchain into DevOps practices can lead to more secure and efficient development pipelines. In conclusion, blockchain technology holds the potential to transform software development in profound ways. From enhancing security and trust to revolutionizing project management and collaboration, the implications are vast. The cornovirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a severe impact on our daily lives. As a result, there has been an increasing demand for technological solutions to overcome such challenges. The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently emerged to improve many aspects of human’s day-to-day activities and routines. IoT makes it easier to follow the safety guidelines and precautions provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior reports have shown that the world nowadays may need more IoT facilities than ever before. However, little is known about the reaction of the IoT community towards defeating the COVID-19 pandemic, technologies being used, solutions being provided, and how our societies perceive the IoT means available to them. In this paper, we conduct an empirical study to investigate the IoT response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, we study the characteristics of the IoT solutions hosted on a large online IoT community (i.e., Hackster.io) throughout the year of 2020. The study: (a) explores the proportion, types, and nations of IoT solutions/engineers that contributed to defeating COVID-19, (b) characterizes the complexity of COVID-19 IoT solutions, and (c) identifies how IoT solutions are perceived by the surrounding community. Our results indicate that IoT engineers have been actively working towards providing solutions to help their societies, especially in the most affected nations. Our findings (i) provide insights into the aspects IoT practitioners need to pay more attention to when developing IoT solutions for COVID-19 and to (ii) outlines the common IoT solutions and technologies available to humans to deal with the current challenges.
