A Twenty‐Year Citation Analysis of the Knowledge Outflow and Inflow Patterns from the Journal of Product Innovation Management

Abstract: Since its inception in 1984, an emphasis on cross‐functionality and interdisciplinary research was encrypted into the DNA of the Journal of Product and Innovation Management (JPIM). This essay explores the extent to which the journal has served as a platform for exchange of ideas between different disciplines by examining knowledge outflow and inflow with other scientific journals and disciplines over a 20‐year period (1994‐2013). Based on an extensive bibliometric database, we gain insights about how JPIM has… Show more

“…Our results highlight these different viewpoints, such as in relation to the applied search space. Accordingly, we not only answer the call from JPIM to delineate stronger links among neighboring disciplines, including the larger management literature on innovation (Sarin et al, 2018), but we also bridge related work across domains, thereby both reducing encapsulation and bias arising from paradigmatic rigidity (Ahuja and Lampert, 2001;Kogut and Zander, 1992) and maximizing theoretical understanding for impactful research (Zahra and Newey, 2009).…”

“…By clarifying the rich intellectual structure and linking existing research across disciplines, we reveal the core thematic clusters of the field, contrast the different thinking of search approaches in each phase, and provide a unified and cohesive “global view” of the field. This leads to a new ways of seeing for theory integration across disciplines (Shaw, Tangirala, Vissa, and Rodell, 2008) and responds to the call from JPIM to form stronger linkages between neighboring disciplines and to include the larger management literature on innovation (Sarin, Haon, and Belkhouja, 2018). Building on that, our generative work creates a new concept (Torraco, 2005) by developing the unique idea of “decoupled search.” We introduce an original model for managing external knowledge search for innovation (Gatrell and Breslin, 2017).…”

“…(the results analysis by treemaps is available in the Web of Science database). By analyzing the results by the source title, we were able to identify the most significant journals focusing on the innovations: This group of journals was first analyzed by Linton and Thongpapanl (2004) and Biemans et al (2007), then by Thongpapanl (2012), and followed by Sarin et al (2018aSarin et al ( , 2018b.…”

“…Journal-specific reviews in this discipline frequently apply bibliometric methods as well-see, for example, the most recent reviews in the Journal of Product Innovation Management (Antons, Kleer, & Salge, 2016;Sarin, Haon, & Belkhouja, 2018), R&D Management (Rigby, 2016), Technovation (Merino, do Carmo, & Alvarez, 2006), or Research-Technology Management (Shum, Park, Maine, & Pitt, 2019). Similarly, we consider a bibliometric, science mapping study as appropriate to analyse the scientific corpus published in CIM to enhance the objectivity of results.…”

“…First, the distribution of cited and citing journals each is considerably dispersed with relatively low frequencies of citation and record counts for the top 15 journals. Second, the most prominently represented journal in this overview is the Journal of Product Innovation Management , which is renowned as the leading outlet for research on the management of technology and innovation (Sarin et al, ), and shares close historical ties with CIM. Second, journals dedicated to the field of project management are notably absent from the top 20 cited or citing sources.…”
