A tuberculosis contact investigation involving a large number of contacts tested with interferon-gamma release assay at a nursing school: Kanagawa, Japan, 2012

Abstract: In May 2012, a teacher of a nursing school with about 300 staff members and students in Japan was diagnosed with sputum smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), leading to an investigation involving nearly 300 contacts. We describe the contacts’ closeness to the index TB patient and the likelihood of TB infection and disease.A case of TB was defined as an individual with positive bacteriological tests or by a physician diagnosis of TB. A latent TB infection (LTBI) case was defined as an individual who had a… Show more

TB outbreaks involving hospitals, including psychiatric hospitals, workplaces, the military, schools, prisons, and sometimes the homeless, have also been reported [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…The practice of contact investigations of TB contacts in Japan [1012] is similar to that recommended elsewhere [13]; however, there are two differences. First, IGRA, rather than tuberculin skin testing (TST), is commonly used [1416] to screen for latent TB infection (LTBI), because IGRA is more specific and can avoid interference caused by Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination, the rate of which is quite high (90%–95%) in the country [17].…”
