A TSTT integrated FronTier code and its applications in computational fluid physics

Abstract: We introduce the FronTier-Lite software package and its adaptation to the TSTT geometry and mesh entity data interface. This package is extracted from the original front tracking code for general purpose scientific and engineering applications. The package contains a static interface library and a dynamic front propagation library. It can be used in research of different scientific problems. We demonstrate the application of FronTier in the simulations of fuel injection jet, the fusion pellet injection and flu… Show more

“…An irregular grid is then constructed in the vicinity of the interface and a special finite-difference stencil is used to solve the flow equations on this irregular grid. An implementation is available on the FronTier library (Glimm et al, 2000(Glimm et al, , 2002Fix et al, 2005). Later, Tryggvason and coworkers (Unverdi and Tryggvason, 1992;Tryggvason et al, 2001) improved the front-tracking method so that the fixed grid does not change near the interface.…”

“…We solve the coupled hyperbolic-elliptic system (1-8) in an operator-splitting fashion using the method of front tracking. The front-tracking technique, its implementation in the multiphysics code FronTier, and applications to computational fluid dynamics problems are described in detail in [12][13][14] and references therein. The front-tracking algorithm for multiphase MHD equations in the low magnetic Reynolds number approximation was developed in [10].…”

“…It allows not only to solve accurately the Riemann problem for the phase boundary, but also to apply different mathematical approximations in the regions separated by interfaces to account for different material properties and, if necessary, eliminate fast time scales in numerical simulations. The three-dimensional, fronttracking algorithm has been recently upgraded with a so-called locally-grid-based tracking [14] that enabled robust resolution of very complex topological changes in the FronTier code. The comparison of front tracking and other numerical methods resolving interfaces, in particular the level-set method, can be found in [13].…”

“…The premise of our technology development is that advanced mesh, geometry and field services can be provided as libraries that can be used with minimal intrusion into application codes. During SciDAC-1, the TSTT team developed and deployed a number of advanced technologies -including the Frontier-Lite front tracking library [11], the Mesquite mesh quality improvement toolkit [4], and unstructured mesh refinement [38] and mesh swapping tools -that provide ample evidence of the viability of this approach. Moreover, we combined these component services in an interoperable manner to provide new integrated services such as AMR-front tracking, parallel adaptive loop libraries, and combined geometry-mesh modification tools for use in shape optimization applications.…”
