A tribute to pioneers of strongly coupled plasmas: Hugh E. DeWitt, Bernard Jancovici, and Forrest J. Rogers

Abstract: The field of strongly coupled Coulomb systems that stretches from dense plasma, to astrophysics, condensed matter and high energy physics has seen a dramatic development over the last four decades. At the beginning of this process were a few physicists whose work has had a high impact on many exciting developments of the recent years. Among them are Hugh E. DeWitt, Bernard Jancovici and Forrest J. Rogers who passed away in 2013–2014. Their important contributions to the field of strongly coupled Coulomb system… Show more

“…Subtraction of the Landau integral, I L , is necessary to avoid double counting of terms. The Landau integral corresponds to the static second-Born approximation (collision integrals of second order in the pair potential) which are contained (as the lowest iteration orders) in both, the T matrix and the dynamically screened potential, see [186] for a recent discussion and further references.…”

“…The common interest in the theory of Green functions led to close contacts with colleagues in Prague. Contacts with colleagues in the West could be intensified after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, for example, with Hugh E. DeWitt (Livermore), see Whitley et al, James A. McLennan (Bethlehem), and H. Sigurd Köhler (Tucson, USA), as well as with German colleagues, including Günter Ecker (Bochum), Friedrich Hensel (Marburg), Peter Mulser (Darmstadt), and Karl‐Heinz Spatschek (Düsseldorf). Many of these colleagues readily agreed to contribute to a special volume on the Contributions to Plasma Physics on the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1997.…”

“…The history of the present SCCS conferences started 40 years ago in June 1977 in Orleans la Source, where Gabor Kalman and Marc Feix organized the first SCCS Conference during June 7–10, 1977 . The present author remembers still the meetings in Orleans la Source attended by several pioneers in the field of strongly coupled plasmas, such as Claude Deutsch, Marc Feix, Marie‐Madelaine Gombert, Gabor Kalman, and Maurice Skowronek, and several prominent colleagues who already left us, such as Hugh De Witt, Forrest Rogers, and Bernard Jancovici (see Figure ). With Hugh de Witt and Forest Roger, the present author exchanged letters since the beginning of the 1970s, so the first SCCS conference was the first and unique chance to meet and exchange ideas.…”
