“…He arranged to have Duncan Chappell named as assistant editor and to have a book review editor, initially Deidre Greig, but neither of them could have any significant influence over his personal control. As I have explained in a tribute to Allen published after his death (Biles, 2005) with the passage of time, the demand for a new approach to editing the Journal became intense. In May 1980, during the period that I was president of the society, it was my unhappy duty to chair the executive meeting that decided the time had come for a new editor to be appointed. While expressing its sincere appreciation for all that Allen had done to establish and maintain the journal, the executive decided that a change was necessary in order to bring a more professional, and less personal, image to the journal.…”

(Biles, 2005, p. 3)Shortly after that meeting Stephen Mugford from the ANU took over as editor, and Allen ceased making any submissions to this journal even though he continued to publish his work in other journals.…”

“…Although the intention was to publish peer-reviewed articles Bartholomew appears to have had his own ideas about what that meant. Eventually, he had to be replaced by the executive of the society in circumstances that were less than agreeable to him (Biles, 2005). Reading back we see many weaknesses -and surprising absences.…”

“…As recalled by David Biles, the idea for a journal came from Allan Bartholomew, the Psychiatrist Superintendent at Pentridge Prison, a 'frustrated academic' who was a regular visitor to the Department. 5 Bartholomew had negotiated an understanding with the Southdown Press 'to publish a criminology journal without cost to him or us provided that he supplied suitable material for publication' (Biles, 2005). In April 1967, the Board of Studies in Criminology at Melbourne considered a two-page proposal drafted by another lecturer, Deidre Greig, for the establishment of what was variously called an 'Australian Journal of Criminology' or an 'Australian Criminology Review'.…”
