Mastering real-time and accurate downhole information is crucial for ensuring drilling safety, improving drilling efficiency, and maximizing economic benefits. In recent years, logging while drilling (LWD) technologies, represented by mud pulse telemetry (MPT), achieved significant success. However, they still face challenges such as a large amount of downhole information conflicting with low information transmission rates, severe channel distortion, strong noise interference, and weak surface receiving signals. Therefore, this review collects and updates the papers, patents, and conference articles in the relevant field over the past ten years. Starting from the basic structure of communication systems, the downhole signal coding and modulation technologies of the MPT system are discussed. The attenuation reflection brought by the mud channel and various noise interferences in the system are described. The surface noise cancellation, channel equalization, synchronization, and decoding are studied in detail. By analyzing the theoretical principles, development breakthroughs, and relevant challenges that can improve the development of LWD technologies, this review aims to assist researchers in the field in obtaining the latest references and strategies.

MPPM (Multipulse Position Modulation) is a pulse code technology that is widely used in optical communication and deep space communication due to its high energy efficiency. Combination code is a variation of MPPM and is widely used in MWD (Measurement While Drilling) telemetry systems. However, whether it is MPPM or combination code, it is difficult to establish a simple mapping relationship between bit symbols and pulse symbols. Therefore, an encoding table is usually used to realize the mapping between bit symbols and pulse symbols. With an increase in bit width, the storage complexity of the encoding table increases exponentially. This is unacceptable for underground transmitters working in harsh environments. This paper maps the code symbols of MPPM to a hyper-triangular region of a high-dimensional tensor and establishes a simple lookup table and lookup algorithm to achieve low-complexity mapping from bit symbols to MPPM code symbols. At the same time, this paper also provides a method for extending from MPPM code symbols to commonly used combination code symbols in MWD, thereby providing an efficient implementation path for large bit width combination code encoding at the underground end of MWD.

A Low Error Rate BCH-Based Encoder-Decoder Approach for Electromagnetic Measurement While Drilling System

In practical applications of electromagnetic measurement while drilling (EM-MWD) in the underground coal mine, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a receiver cannot always meet the requirements of reliable communication conditions due to the earth attenuation, interfering signal from the well site, and so on. Aimed to solve these problems, this paper presents a low error rate Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH)-based encoder-decoder technology for EM-MWD. First, this paper studies the relationship among the BCH encoding error performance and the decoding method, the source length, and other factors through simulation; then, we obtain an optimal length of BCH code for EM-MWD through analyzing the bit error performance of hard-decision decoding and soft-decision decoding with different lengths of BCH code. Finally, we compare the proposed algorithm with the conventional binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) approach in the actual environment. The results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the bit error rate by about ten times at a lower SNR, achieving a reliable communication condition when the SNR of a received signal is reduced. It demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed BCH encoder and the decoder algorithm based on BPSK for EM-MWD. INDEX TERMS EM-MWD system, BPSK, BCH coding, optimized coding techniques.
