“…The combination of real-time, simultaneous, hydroacoustic echo-sounding (horizontal or vertical) with interrogation of individuals with transmitters or transponders is a concept that dates back to Mitson and Storeton-West [159]. Given the numerous technological improvements since the 1970s, this approach should now be explored using state-of-the-art hydroacoustic equipment to simultaneously combine local-scale habitat and animal (especially fish) distribution and abundance to telemetered behaviour and ecophysiology of tagged individuals.…”

“…Transponder tags are triggered to transmit in response to an interrogating sonar pulse. Range of the fish can be determined from the time delay between sonar emission and reception of the tag pulse, with a bearing on the tag allowing an accurate location to be obtained (Mitson & Storeton-West, 1971). Transponder systems may be impractical in shallow fresh waters due to the bulk of the sonar transducer if a high precision fix is required.…”

“…The latter system is best used for relatively static fish with a home range. Another system employed succcssfully in the marine environment uses transponding tags that transmit in response to an interrogating sonar pulse (Mitson & Storeton-West, 1971). A new system (RAFIX) is described here which allows direct range and bearing measurements in the field from a single station, using lightweight equipment.…”

“…A very high resolution electronic sector-scanning sonar (0.33 degree beam swept over a 30 degree sector 10 4 times per second) (Mitson and Cook, 1971) was used in conjunction with a transponding acoustic fish tag, (Mitson and Storeton-West, 1971). …”
