We carried out a molecular phylogenetic analysis of Neotropical lady ferns (Athyrium s.str. and Anisocampium) using five plastid markers. We found two major results. First, three Neotropical species (Anisocampium skinneri, Athyrium palmense, A. tejeroi) formed a clade, and this clade was sister to the rest of Athyrium. The three members of this clade differ from Athyrium s.l. by creeping rhizomes with internodes 1–2 mm long, and rhizome apices that protrude beyond the current season's cluster of leaves. Also, the leaves are distichously arranged, lack trophopods, have petiole bases broadly U‐shaped in transverse section, and bear thin, membranous laminae. We recognize this clade as a new genus, Ephemeropteris, and provide three new combinations: E. palmensis, E. skinneri, and E. tejeroi. The name of the new genus is derived from the seasonal production of its leaves, which are produced during the wet season and die back (i.e., are ephemeral) at the beginning of the dry season. Ephemeropteris is largely restricted to the Pacific side of Central America, a region that exhibits a marked dry season from November to May. We provide a key to the seven genera (including Ephemeropteris) we now recognize in the Athyriaceae, and a taxonomic treatment of the three species of Ephemeropteris. The treatment includes descriptions, illustrations, nomenclatural data, specimens cited, and a dot‐distribution map. Our second major result from the phylogenetic analysis is that the remaining three Neotropical species of Athyrium s.str. are polyphyletic. One of our seven samples was resolved in the A. filix‐femina clade (sect. Athyrium), to which all species of Neotropical Athyrium were previously assumed to belong to. Our six other samples of Neotropical Athyrium were resolved in A. sect. Mackinnoniana, previously construed as entirely Asian.

For the robust identification of taxonomically complex fern family like Athyriaceae, light and scanning electron microscopy is significance implications. This article present first microscopic investigation of foliar micromorphology of 3 genera and 10 species belonging to Athyriaceae namely, Athyrium, Deparia, and Diplazium were collected from different localities in Malakand Division, Northern Pakistan. In present study we compare foliar micromorphology of all 10 species using standard protocols of light microcopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy. Qualitative micromorphological variations in shape of epidermal cells, anticlinal wall pattern, stomatal type and shape, stomatal pore shape, guard cells shape, and trichomes types were studied. In addition, some quantitative characters were also studied and data were statistically analyzed in epidermal cell size, stomatal size, stomatal pore size, stomatal density, and stomatal index. The pivotal result of study include; shape of epidermal cell in all species is irregular on both abaxial and adaxial surfaces. The anticlinal walls are sinuous in most of the species but some species have irregular lobed and broadly lobed wall. Leaves are hypostomatic in all studied species. Two main categories of stomatal type were found: polocytic and anomocytic. Unicellular nonglandular trichomes were observed in only one species Athyrium mackinnoni. The variation in foliar micromorphological characters between the genera and within the species was useful in identification and classification and have potential taxonomic significance for species differentiation. An identification key using micromorphological characters are provided to distinguish genera and species.

The taxonomy of the cliff fern family Woodsiaceae has been controversial with 22–59 species in 1–7 genera recognized in various classifications. This is mainly due to limited taxon sampling (up to 33 accessions representing up to 21 species) and poor resolution in molecular studies so far. In the present study, DNA sequences of five plastid markers (atpA, matK, rbcL, rps4 + rps4‐trnS, trnL + trnL‐F) of 152 accessions representing ca. 43 out of ca. 65 species estimated of Woodsiaceae (122 accessions), and 30 non‐Woodsiaceae accessions from the most closely related four families (Athyriaceae, Blechnaceae, Onocleaceae, Thelypteridaceae) were used to infer a phylogeny. Our major results include: (1) Woodsiaceae are strongly supported as monophyletic; (2) Two major clades representing the deepest split in Woodsiaceae are identified, corresponding to the two recently proposed subfamilies, Woodsioideae and Protowoodsioideae; (3) Within Woodsioideae and Protowoodsioideae, two and three well‐supported subclades, respectively, are determined; (4) Cheilanthopsis is resolved as paraphyletic in relation to Hymenocystis (sampled for the first time) and Protowoodsia; (5) Physematium and Woodsiopsis are paraphyletic in relation to a clade containing Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, and Protowoodsia; (6) Evolution of 13 morphological characters is inferred in a phylogenetic context, and morphological synapomorphies of each of the five major subclades are identified; (7) We propose to recognize two genera in Woodsiaceae based on deep divergence (ca. 45 Ma), morphology, chromosome number, and geographic distribution: Physematium (syn.: Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, Protowoodsia, Woodsiopsis) and Woodsia (syn.: Eriosoriopsis), and Physematium is further divided into three subgenera and Woodsia into two subgenera; (8) we describe ×Woodsimatium, a hybrid genus (nothogen. nov.) between the two genera recognized. A taxonomic synopsis of the family is provided, and 15 new combinations are made.
