A model is a simplified representation of an aspect of the world for a specific purpose. In complex systems, many aspects are to be handled, from architectural aspects to dynamic behavior, functionalities, user-interface, and extrafunctional concerns (such as security, reliability, timeliness, etc.). For software systems, the design process can then be characterized as the weaving of all these aspects into a detailed design model. Model Driven Design aims at automating this weaving process, that is automatically deriving software systems from theirs models. This paper explores the relationship between modeling and aspect weaving. It points out some of the challenges related to such automatic model weaving, illustrating them with the example of a weaving process for behavioral models represented as scenarios.

Abstract. Successful reusable software for large-scale distributed systems often must operate in multiple contexts, e.g., due to (1) integration with other systems using different technologies and platforms, (2) constant fine tuning needed to satisfy changing customer needs, and (3) evolving market conditions resulting from new laws and regulations. This situation causes vexing challenges for developers of reusable software, who must manage the variation between these contexts without overcomplicating their solutions and exceeding project time and effort constraints. This paper provides three contributions to R&D efforts that address these challenges. First, it motivates the use of a concern-based approach to enhance the level of abstraction at which component-based distributed systems are developed and reused to (1) improve software quality and developer productivity, and (2) localize variability aspects to simplify substitution of reusable component implementations. Second, we present our experience dealing with different domain-and middleware-specific variability gained applying model-based component middleware software technologies to develop an Inventory Tracking System that manages the flow of goods in warehouses. Third, we present a concern-based research strategy aimed at effectively managing the variability caused by the presence of multiple middleware platforms and technologies. Our experience to date shows that using model-based software tools and component middleware as the core elements of software composition and reuse -in conjunction with concern-based commonality and variability analysis -helps reduce development complexity, improve system maintainability and reuse, and increase developer productivity.

Abstract. Composition mechanisms are intended to build a target system out of many independent units. The paper presents how the aspect technology may leverage the hierarchical composition, by supporting two orthogonal mechanisms (vertical and horizontal) for composing completely autonomous parts. The vertical mechanism is in charge of coordinating heterogeneous components, tools or services at a high level of abstraction, by hiding the technical details. The result of such a composition is called "domain" and, at its turn, it represents a high granularity unit of reuse. The horizontal mechanism composes domains at the level of their abstract concepts, even if they have been independently designed and implemented. The paper discusses the formalization of the vertical and horizontal compositions, and the wizard we have developed for generating the needed code (using Aspect Oriented Programming) in order to build the modeled applications.
