“…It may be seen that, in both immature and adult sera, the binding of T4 is shared between an apparently homogeneous TBPA, presenting one isoform with pl 5.1 and a heterogeneous TBG, presenting at least four major isoforms, with pls of 4.35, 4.45, 4.50 and 4.55, respectively. As could be expected from our previous findings [ 1,2] the bulk of bound T4 is on TBG in the pups and on TBPA in the adults. For the enriched TBG preparation, which served as marker of the TBG zone of the native sera, a slight enrichment in the most acidic isoform is observed, which might result from an artefactual selection during the preparative process.…”

“…Thus to the previously demonstrated similarities between the proteins of the two species, i.e. comparable electrophoretic and equilibrium binding characteristics [ 1,2], the present data add novel indications of functional as well as structural relationships.…”

“…Rodents contain a gene that can encode the TBG protein, but it is expressed at very low levels in adult animals (Vranckx et al, 1990;Rouaze-Romet et al, 1992;Tani et al, 1994). Developmental studies show TBG protein levels increase during the early postnatal period in rodents, but then decline to very low levels by weaning and remain low through the remainder of the animal's life span (Savu et al, 1987(Savu et al, , 1991Vranckx et al, 1990). As in humans, T3 and T4 have higher affinity for TBG than TTR or albumin in rodents.…”

“…The half-life of plasma T 4 is shorter (12 to 24 hours in rats) as compared to human T 4 (5 to 9 days) due to the different binding proteins (Vranckx et al, 1994). In humans, circulating T 4 is bound to thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) which is virtually undetectable in rats after eight weeks of age (Savu et al, 1987;Vranckx et al, 1994). In rats, T 4 binds predominantly to albumin and its binding affinity is far less than TBG (approximately 1000 times lower); (Capen, 1996).…”
