We assessed the potential competitive exclusion of southern bushbuck (hereafter bushbuck, Tragelaphus scriptus) by nyala (Tragelaphus angasii), the larger of the two spiral-horned browsing antelopes (members of the Tragelaphine family). It has been suggested that high concentrations of nyala, capable of browsing a greater breadth of food items, negatively influence bushbuck. Using camera trap data, we explored factors influencing spatio-temporal activity patterns and co-occurrence of both species within three Protected Areas (PAs) of the Maputaland Conservation Unit, South Africa. Bushbuck have gone locally extinct within one of our survey areas, likely because of competitive pressures and cascading effects. Our results indicated a segregation of activities; bushbuck was more nocturnal, particularly in areas with higher nyala occupancy. Nyala occupancy overall was higher than bushbuck. When comparing occupancies at the management level, bushbuck occupancy was higher than nyala within two survey areas: where nyala were modelled as present but populations were managed through culling, and where leopard (Panthera pardus) populations were highest. Co-occurrence was most likely in these two survey areas, indicating a threshold of nyala occupancy up to which bushbuck were tolerant. Where nyala were present in conjunction with high leopard density, bushbuck occupancy was higher. Conversely, where leopard density was low, the cascading effect was of high nyala occupancy, with subsequent competitive exclusion of bushbuck. Our results have critical management implications for PAs, including the management of carrying capacities, the preservation of native species assemblages and habitat management. We provide evidence that a larger-bodied sympatric species can outcompete subordinate sympatric browsers when not effectively managed, particularly where the predation effects that influence population dynamics are limited.

We ask what the effects of mutualism on population dynamics of two competitive species are. We model the population dynamics of mutualistic interactions with positive density and frequency dependences. We specifically assume the dynamics of Müllerian mimicry in butterflies, where the mortality of both species is reduced depending on the relative frequency of the other species. We assume that the two species are under Lotka-Volterra density-dependent competition. The equilibria are compared with the cases of competition alone. Unlike the traditional model of positive density dependence, population explosion does not appear in the current dynamics, but the new equilibrium is simply achieved. It is because the effects of positive density or frequency dependence are restricted to parts of mortality. Both positive density and frequency dependences do promote coexistence of the mimetic species. However, the two models show a distinctive difference for coexistence. The effects of positive density dependence are rather limited. In contrast, positive frequency dependence always promotes coexistence, irrespective of environmental conditions. The results may imply that the evolutionary origin of Müllerian mimicry may depend on frequency dependence (and density dependence), but that its current population dynamics may depend solely on density dependence. The role of frequency and density dependences on evolutionary dynamics is an open question.

Το ανοιχτό λογισμικό γνωρίζει μεγάλη διάχυση, καθώς προσφέρει μια σειρά από πλεονεκτήματα, όπως τεχνολογική ποιότητα και αξιοπιστία αλλά και σημαντική εξοικονόμηση χρημάτων. Διαχειριστικά, τα χαρακτηριστικά αυτά του δίνουν σημαντικό πλεονέκτημα έναντι των ανταγωνιστικών προϊόντων ιδιόκτητου λογισμικού κλειστού κώδικα. Σήμερα, το οικοσύστημα του ανοιχτού λογισμικού αποτελείται από χιλιάδες έργα, κοινότητες και λύσεις λογισμικού. Στόχος της παρούσας διατριβής είναι να συνεισφέρει στην έρευνα για το ανοιχτό λογισμικό, μέσα από τη μελέτη τόσο της διάχυσής του, όσο και των επιδράσεών της σε οικονομικό και κοινωνικό επίπεδο. Η έρευνα εστιάζει στην πορεία της διάχυσης μέσα στο χρόνο και προσδιορίζει και αποτιμά σχέσεις αιτίας και αποτελέσματος του φαινομένου. Αφενός, προσδιορίζονται και αποτιμούνται οι παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν τη διάχυση και βιωσιμότητα του ανοιχτού λογισμικού (σχέσεις αιτίας). Αφετέρου, μελετώνται οι επιπτώσεις (σχέσεις αποτελέσματος) της διάχυσης σε οικονομικό και σε κοινωνικο-πολιτικό επίπεδο. Στο οικονομικό επίπεδο, πραγματοποιείται ανάλυση της αγοράς λογισμικού και εξετάζεται η συμπεριφορά και η δομή της, ως αποτέλεσμα όχι μόνο της εισόδου του ανοιχτού λογισμικού, αλλά και των επιχειρηματικών μοντέλων ανοιχτού λογισμικού. Στο κοινωνικό-πολιτικό επίπεδο μελετώνται οι επιδράσεις στο δημόσιο τομέα και ιδιαίτερα στην ηλεκτρονική διακυβέρνηση και εκπαίδευση.Τα προτεινόμενα μοντέλα και μεθοδολογίες αποτελούν τμήμα της έρευνας στο πλαίσιο της διοίκησης των πληροφοριακών συστημάτων. Τα μοντέλα βασίζονται σε θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο που δανείζεται στοιχεία τόσο από τις θεωρίες αποδοχής των πληροφοριακών συστημάτων και διάχυσης των καινοτομιών, όσο και από οικονομικές και κοινωνικές θεωρίες, ενώ η αποτίμηση των μοντέλων υλοποιείται με αυστηρό μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο των μαθηματικών και της στατιστικής, παρέχοντας πιο ακριβείς, a-priori εκτιμήσεις της πορείας διάχυσης, του ανταγωνισμού και των πιθανών σημείων ισορροπίας της αγοράς. Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας φιλοδοξούν να αποτελέσουν χρήσιμα βοηθητικά εργαλεία για τους υπεύθυνους λήψης αποφάσεων και στρατηγικού σχεδιασμού σχετικά με τεχνολογικά θέματα τόσο σε επιχειρηματικό, όσο και σε πολιτικό επίπεδο, καθώς δίνουν τη δυνατότητα για την αξιολόγηση τεχνολογικών, κοινωνικών, οικονομικών και θεσμικών παραγόντων που συντελούν στη διάχυση της τεχνολογίας του ανοιχτού λογισμικού. Τέτοιου είδους εκτιμήσεις, μπορούν να αποβούν πολύ χρήσιμες σε ένα διαρκώς εξελισσόμενο και ανταγωνιστικό περιβάλλον, όπως αυτό της αγοράς ΤΠΕ
