A Three-Dimensional Analytical Solution for Reservoir Expansion, Surface Uplift and Caprock Stress Due to Pressurized Reservoirs

Abstract: An analytical solution is presented for the displacement, strain and stress of a three-dimensional poro-elastic model with three layers, where the three layers are an underburden, a reservoir with a given fluid pressure, and an overburden. The fluid pressure in the reservoir is assumed symmetrical around the z-axis and represented by a Fourier cosine series. The poro-elastic solution is expressed as a superposition of the solutions for each term in the Fourier series. It is shown that the bulk strain in the re… Show more

“…This happens when no variations of pore pressure and temperature occur in the external region, as expected in geothermal environments (e.g. Guido et al 2015;Wangen & Halvorsen 2020), where the reservoir, that is the inclusion, is hydraulically confined. Accordingly, the timescale for fluids to diffuse outside V S is much longer than the one needed to diffuse within V S .…”

“…19,20,24 simplified the problem by considering the reservoir embedded in a linear elastic homogeneous semi-infinite medium. Du and Olson, 25 Mehrabian and Abousleiman, 26 Wangen and Halvorsen 27 developed analytical models for the analysis of displacement and strain fields in a massif with three layers of different materials. In these works, the perturbation in the massif was caused by the axisymmetric variation of pore pressure in a cylindrical reservoir.…”

“…Another approach often discussed in literature is the use of the Eshelby inclusion (ESHELBY, 1957) approach as discussed by Walsh (2002). These various approaches are equivalent as pointed out by Rudnicki (2011).…”
