We observed cannibalism by juvenile and adult largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) on their young-of-year (YOY) over nearly three decades (1984-2012) in a small temperate lake located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. Largemouth bass are consistently the only fish species in the lake, necessitating the importance of studying filial cannibalism as a valuable energy source although it has potential consequences on recruitment and overall population structure. Annual whole-lake population estimates of juvenile and adult bass ranged 91-460 individuals, and these oscillations had significant differences between periods of higher and lower densities. Captured bass >150 mm in total length were individually tagged and had their stomach contents analyzed before being released. Despite significant differences in population estimates, we found no relationship with cannibalism. Additionally, we found no apparent patterns relating cannibalism to day of year, water temperature, or recruitment rates. We also found no differences in cannibalism or the size of consumed YOY between juvenile and adult bass. However, we found that recaptured individuals who consumed YOY bass on two or more occasions had significantly longer total length than individuals who consumed YOY bass one time or not at all, which provides additional evidence of dietary specialization as previously found in this population. Notwithstanding these patterns in cannibalism and the potential energetic benefits that it provides, we could not discern the effects of it on either individual growth rates or consequential changes in recruitment and overall population size. Regardless of the ever-present pressure of filial cannibalism, the population sustained recruitment across the whole study period.

Disentangling the causes and consequences of ontogenetic niche shifts has been a pivotal challenge in ecology, aiming to enhance the understanding of biological processes that function at the individual, population, and community levels. Studies on ontogenetic dietary shifts have traditionally focused on short time scales, mostly including sampling covering just one or a few consecutive years, thus neglecting possible aspects of temporal variation and ecosystem stability that can only be revealed on long-term scales. We address ontogenetic dietary shifts of two fish predators in an intraguild system (Arctic charr and brown trout) using a long-term dataset spanning 20 consecutive years. Our study revealed distinct ontogenetic niche shifts of the two intraguild predators and demonstrated that these patterns were stable over time, suggesting large stability in prey acquisition and resource partitioning despite changes in their abundances and relative species composition. Some interannual variation was observed, but this was primarily due to sampling bias from low observation numbers for some ontogenetic stages, reflecting a common methodical challenge for ontogenetic niche shift studies. The persistent patterns in the trophic ontogeny of intraguild predators likely facilitate population and community stability by reducing inter- and/or intraspecific competition, thereby having important consequences for ecosystem functioning and resilience. Our study provides a strong rationale for performing ontogenetic niche shift studies over several consecutive years, enabling important insights into temporal variation, enhancement of observation numbers by merging data from multiple years, and the facilitation of a less intrusive sampling scheme for more vulnerable populations.

Episodic zooplanktivory by largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) on Daphnia: a 25-year natural history record from a small northern temperate lake

We observed episodic zooplanktivory by largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides; LMB) ! 150 mm total length (TL) on the cladoceran Daphnia spp. over two decades in a small oligotrophic lake. While zooplanktivory is beneficial for young-of-year and juvenile LMB, dietary utilization of Daphnia by adults is unusual because zooplankton are not energetically favorable and the LMB buccal cavity is poorly adapted for filter feeding. We classified the threshold of ! 38 Daphnia per feeding event as an episode of zooplanktivory based on data from a zooplankton specialist, the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). In this study, 1718 LMB were caught, marked, sampled, and released. Gut contents at the time of capture were collected via gastric lavage. We captured the same 612 LMB 3 or more times. Of these, approximately 26% had at least one episode of zooplanktivory and approximately 6% had multiple episodes. There was no relationship between the population sizes of Daphnia and LMB, but the yearly percentage of individual LMB with at least one episode of zooplanktivory significantly increased with LMB population density. Episodes of zooplanktivory were more likely to occur later in the season when Daphnia were more abundant in the lake. The probability of an individual LMB having a repeat episode of zooplanktivory was not significantly different from expected; however, the probability of a LMB not having a single episode was significantly greater than expected by random chance signifying that some LMB were better than others at eliminating Daphnia from their diets. The probability of episodic zooplanktivory significantly decreased with increasing fish TL and weight but significantly increased with increasing Daphnia abundance. LMB without episodes of zooplanktivory achieved significantly greater maximum weight and body condition factor than those with them, but there was no statistical difference in their maximum TL or longevity (duration between first and final capture of the same LMB).
