Context: The water extract of Boswellia sacra Flueck. (Burseraceae) is used in the treatment of gastric and hepatic disorders in the Arab countries. Objective: The effect of Boswellia sacra water extract on gastric secretion and experimentally induced gastric ulcers in rats was studied. Materials and methods: Acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers, pylorus ligation, aspirininduced, ethanol-induced, and restraint plus cold stress-induced gastric ulcer models were employed. The effect on normal rats was also studied. The water extract of B. sacra was administered orally at doses of 2 and 5 ml/kg once daily ranging from single dose to 30 d treatment depending on the model. The extract was subjected to GC-MS analysis to determine the presence of various phytoconstituents. Results: Boswellia sacra water extract (5 ml/kg, p.o (per os)) aggravated acetic acid-induced chronic ulcers, wherein an increase in ulcer index (p50.01) and ulcer score (p50.05) was observed. In pylorus-ligated rats, the extract increased gastric content volume (p50.01), free acidity (p50.01), total acidity (p50.01), ulcer index (p50.01), and pepsin activity (p50.05). There was no significant effect on the development of ethanol-induced and aspirin-induced ulcers while an increase in the development of stress-induced ulcers was observed (p50.01). The extract did not produce any ulcers when administered to normal rats. The dose of 2 ml/kg was less proulcerogenic compared with 5 ml/kg. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of several phytoconstituents that included menthol, 3-cyclohexen-1-ol, and octanoic acid. Conclusion: Boswellia sacra water extract has proulcerogenic activity due to its gastric hypersecretory effect.

Background: The water extract of oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia sacra Fleuckiger (Burseraceae) is used in the treatment of liver problems in the Middle East and Arab-African countries. The present study was carried out to evaluate its effect on liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride in acute and chronic liver injury models. Materials and Methods:The Boswellia sacra extract was administered at doses of 2 ml/kg and 5 ml/kg. Silymarin, a known hepato-protective agent was used as standard. The extract was subjected to GC-MS analysis to determine the presence of various phyto-constituents. Results:The Boswellia sacra extract at tested doses of 2 ml/kg and 5 ml/kg significantly reduced the elevated serum levels of biomarkers in liver damage. The hepatoprotective effect was supported by changes in histopathology. The GC-MS analysis of the extract revealed the presence of several phyto-constituents that included menthol, 3-cyclohexen-1-ol and octanoic acid. Conclusion:The water extract oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia sacra possesses hepatoprotective activity, as claimed by traditional healers within the Middle East and Arab-African countries.

Objective: Cancer represents the second leading cause of death after stroke and heart diseases. Plant extracts have long been used in traditional medicine for the prevention and treatment of many illnesses, including some types of cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiproliferative effects of ethyl acetate fractions of two Lebanese herbs: Inula viscosa (I. vis) and Inula vulgaris (I. vul).Methods: Plants were extracted with ethanol followed by ethyl acetate, then dried and tested on three cell lines including CaCO2, HepG2, and MCF7, to check for their viability and antiproliferative activity, using trypan blue exclusion and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Proton ( 1 H) and carbon ( 13 C) nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) were used to identify the compounds that have been isolated from both Inula species. Results:The current findings were consistent for both trypan blue and MTT assays. The results showed that the most potent effect for I. vul was HepG2 (IC50 20 µg/ml, 27 µg/ml), and for I. vis on MCF7 (9 µg/ml, 15 µg/ml) and CaCO2 (12 µg/ml, 22 µg/ml) in the two mentioned assays respectively. However, insignificant differences were observed among the studied plants for each of the evaluated cells indicating comparable potencies. Quercetin, quercetin glycoside, and epicatechin derivatives were isolated by fractionation on column chromatography and identified using NMR spectroscopy. Conclusion:The antiproliferative activities of the two plants could be related to their content that is significant for high levels of secondary metabolites. The identification of those compounds is necessary to establish a relationship between their chemical structures and their activities.
