A Theory of Planned Behavior Scale for Adherence to Trauma‐Focused Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Treatments

Abstract: Evidence‐based psychotherapies for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such as cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure (CPT/PE), greatly reduce suffering for veterans, but many veterans fail to complete treatment. Developing a theory‐based understanding of adherence is necessary to inform interventions to improve treatment retention. We developed and tested a series of scales applying the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to CPT/PE adherence. The scales were administered in mailed surveys as part … Show more

“…The scale assesses expectations regarding the likely consequences of treatment participation (behavioral beliefs) and the value of those consequences (outcome evaluations), including treatment expectancies and treatment credibility. The scale has adequate factorial validity and correlates with behavioral intentions, TFT treatment dropout, therapeutic alliance, practical treatment barriers, and symptoms of PTSD (present sample, ␣ ϭ .88; Meis et al, 2018).…”

“…Attitudes about trauma-focused treatment. Veterans received a six-item scale assessing patient attitudes about the value of participation in TFTs (six items; Meis et al, 2018), consistent with the attitude construct within the theory of planned behavior (TPB, Ajzen, 1991). The scale assesses expectations regarding the likely consequences of treatment participation (behavioral beliefs) and the value of those consequences (outcome evaluations), including treatment expectancies and treatment credibility.…”

“…The TPB proposes that behavior change can be predicted through intentions for engaging in the behavior, attitudes about the behavior, perceived behavioral control (which includes the concepts of self-efficacy and readiness, [ 44 ]), and subjective norms for the behavior. These are assessed through a suite of scales that adapts the TPB to engagement in TFTs [ 45 ]. Scales include dyad member’s attitudes about treatment (i.e., Treatment Makes Sense and Treatment Fits Needs scales), perceived behavioral control over treatment participation (Participation Control), and perceived subjective norms for treatment participation (Subjective Norms).…”
