Illinoia (Masonaphis) lambersi (Mac-Gillivray, 1960), a macrosiphine aphid species that mainly lives on Rhododendron spp., is native to western North America 1 (Blackman 2010), but adventive 2 in Europe, Macaronesia, South America, and West Asia (Table 1). Especially in Europe, this species has expanded its distribution to more than 10 countries (Table 1) since the first reported invasion in the 1970s (Stroyan 1972, Hille Ris Lambers 1973 and is known as a pest of Rhododendron plants (Hille Ris Lambers 1973, Alford 1994, Blackman 2010).The detection of this adventive species from Japan was reported by Mr. Shigeru Takahashi and Dr. Mitsumaru Inaizumi at the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Applied Entomology and Zoology (Takahashi and Inaizumi 1988).
