A Theoretical Investigation of Postmodern Approaches Used in Medical Settings

Abstract: This study attempts to investigate the use of one of the postmodern family therapy theories, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) in the medical setting. Although SFBT is being widely used in medical settings, a thorough theoretical investigation about its suitability to this area has not been presented. In order to discuss the use of SFBT in the expanding practice of medical family therapy (MedFT), the underpinnings of MedFT and SFBT are examined, in addition to the integrative potential of SFBT with the dom… Show more

“…Research as a secondary theme of Implementation helps to highlight the various implications of family and systems theory in research. Articles included in this secondary theme include incorporating neuroscience into family and systems theory research (Miller & Dillman, 2016), recommendations for trauma-informed approaches (Copley & Carney, 2020), issues with integration (Hanna, 2011; Marquis et al, 2011), diagnosis-specific treatment approaches (Hurst et al, 2012), conducting research in schools (Hooper & Britnell, 2012), pedagogical adjustment in counselor education (Haber et al, 2021; Harrawood et al, 2011; Paylo, 2011; Sommer et al, 2011; Tadros, 2020), and reconceptualizing family and systems theory in family change issues and treatment (Graham et al, 2013; Kolbert et al, 2013; Koltz & Koltz, 2019; Lloyd-Hazlett et al, 2016; Mana & Naveh, 2018; Nims & Duba, 2011; Pereira, 2014; Phipps & Vorster, 2015; Rajaei & Jensen, 2020; Sung et al, 2018; Weir et al, 2021).…”

“…This model also encourages recognition of successes in the past and determine hopeful solutions in the future (Berg, 1994; de Shazer, 1994). Additionally, it is designed to be brief, create change within a few sessions, and is well-suited for medical settings (Sung, Mayo, & Witting, 2018). To illustrate this point, Zhang, Franklin, et al’s (2018) meta-analysis contained nine randomly controlled studies that assessed the use and outcomes of SFBT in medical settings.…”

“…As described above, CF brings various challenges to patients and their families. It is important to realize that “without family cohesion, communication, and emotional support, bonds between family members are likely to be significantly strained by the patient’s illness process” (Sung et al, 2018, p. 201). With families affected by CF, establishing healthy boundaries and coping strategies for stress, grief, and loss are likely possibilities that could require special attention within family therapy (Sung et al, 2018).…”
