A theoretical foundation for investigating the spatial economic attributes of airport-centric developments

Abstract: Among the various areas of interest on the topic of airports and the geographical distribution of land use, one pertinent theme is the spatial economic analysis of airports and their environs. However, the existing literature predominantly focuses on describing the land-use composition of airport-centric developments, without unpacking the spatial economic forces at play. This gap brings to the fore the need to employ an appropriate theoretical lens to guide the spatial economic analysis of airports and their … Show more

“…The discussion about the data sources and cleaning processes should be read on the background of a dire lack of spatial economic data in South Africa (for instance, refer to Mokhele, 2018). “…This assertion is in part informed by the argument of, among others, UN DESA (2013) that persistent urbanisation calls for changes in the way urban development is managed. It should however be acknowledged that the continent is largely characterised by a dire lack of quality spatial economic data (Gumbo et al, 2018;Mokhele, 2017Mokhele, , 2018, which can hinder planning efforts.…”

“…This paper is framed against the backdrop of the argument that theory is the foundation for quality research (Lewin 1945;Mentzer 2008). As opposed to being a tool that is used to generate predictions and laws, the paper understands theory as an analytical lens that is used to conceptualise a particular phenomenon (Mokhele & Geyer 2021), such as logistics. As noted by Liu and McKinnon (2019), theory is important in two interrelated ways.…”
