The Internet of Things (IoT) devices generate a large amount of data over networks; therefore, the efficiency, complexity, interfaces, dynamics, robustness, and interaction need to be re-examined on a large scale. This phenomenon will lead to seamless network connectivity and the capability to provide support for the IoT. The traditional IoT is not enough to provide support. Therefore, we designed this study to provide a systematic analysis of next-generation advancements in the IoT. We propose a systematic catalog that covers the most recent advances in the traditional IoT. An overview of the IoT from the perspectives of big data, data science, and network science disciplines and also connecting technologies is given. We highlight the conceptual view of the IoT, key concepts, growth, and most recent trends. We discuss and highlight the importance and the integration of big data, data science, and network science along with key applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, federated learning, etc. Finally, we discuss various challenges and issues of IoT such as architecture, integration, data provenance, and important applications such as cloud and edge computing, etc. This article will provide aid to the readers and other researchers in an understanding of the IoT’s next-generation developments and tell how they apply to the real world.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are inevitable to meet the requirements of future wireless networks. Recently, researchers have investigated diverse issues related to UAV‐assisted networks (including placement of UAVs, resource management, and spectrum sharing) for a broad range of applications, including disaster management, data collection from the ground sensor network, surveillance, logistic support, etc. This article presents a comprehensive survey of recent advances in UAV‐assisted networks. We mainly emphasize the optimization perspective of UAV‐assisted wireless networks with different objectives, including coverage area, throughput, energy efficiency, quality of service, delay, and outage probability. We provide a detailed discussion for each objective with their constraints, optimization problem, solution approach, and performance metrics. We also provide relationships among different objectives and parameters considered in the literature. Finally, we list open research issues and future research directions to improve UAV‐assisted wireless networks in the context of optimization.

The efficient buffer space management in intermittently connected Internet of Things (IC-IoT) is of great importance for data delivery performance guarantee in such networks. This article considers two typical buffer space management policies for IC-IoT, i.e., buffer-space sharing (BS) and buffer-space allocation (BA). The BS policy allows the buffer space of each device to be fully shared by the exogenous packets and the packets from other devices, while the BA policy divides the buffer space into the source buffer and relay buffer for storing the two kinds of packets separately. With the help of the queueing theory and Markov chain theory, we develop a theoretical framework to capture the sophisticated queueing processes for the buffer space under either BS or BA policy, which enables the limiting distribution of the buffer occupation state to be determined. We then provide theoretical modeling for throughput and expected end-to-end delay to evaluate the fundamental performance of the IC-IoT under the BS and BA policies. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are presented to validate theoretical models and to demonstrate the effects of BS and BA policies on the IC-IoT performance.
