A Thai version of the Michigan hand questionnaire (Thai MHQ): an investigation of the psychometric properties

Abstract: Background The Michigan Hand Questionnaire (MHQ) is widely used to assess the hand/wrist conditions. We translated the original version into Thai (Thai MHQ) and evaluated its psychometric properties. Methods After receiving permission, the original MHQ was translated and cross-culturally adapted to Thai following standard guidelines. Two hundred and seventeen patients who had hand/wrist injuries or disorders were included in the study. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha. Test-retest re… Show more

“…The correlation between the EQ-5D-5L and hand-specific brief MHQ was slightly lower in comparison to QoL versus the shoulder scores, yet closely matches the correlation established for patients with Dupuytren's disease (r = 0.60) [10]. Further studies investigated correlations of the EQ-5D-5L and the original full MHQ and presented coefficients of 0.5 and 0.63 for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome [6] and various hand or wrist conditions [38], respectively. In general, the moderate correlations presented in this study and the aforementioned articles are due to the fact that the constructs measured by the EQ-5D-5L (i.e.…”

“…Demographic data, including age, sex, dominant hand, injured hand, diagnosis, education level and employment status, were recorded. The Thai versions of the PRWHE, MHQ, DASH and EQ-5D were given to all the patients prior to treatment [24][25][26][27]. After completing the four questionnaires, patients were asked to respond to two open-ended questions.…”

“…All four PROMs had previously been translated into Thai and cross-culturally adapted following standard guidelines, and were shown to have adequate internal consistency in all subscales as well as good construct validity and reliability with Thai patients [24][25][26][27][31][32][33].…”

“…Secondary outcomes were functional and symptom severity improvement which were evaluated using the Thai Michigan hand questionnaire at the day before surgery and at the 2nd week postoperatively (postoperative days 12–14) [ 32 ].…”
