A Tetraphosphane Imine Ligand Which Enforces Square‐Pyramidal Coordination

Abstract: The tetrapodal pentadentate NP4 ligand 2,6‐C5H3N[CMe(CH2PPh2)2]2, which is readily prepared from the reaction of the corresponding tetrabromide with KPPh2, forms mononuclear complexes with nickel(II) and cobalt(II). In the case of nickel(II), the coordination mode adopted by the ligand is sensitive to the nature of the counterion: Use of NiCl2 gives a chloro complex as one of the products, which, as determined by X‐ray crystallography, has a central ion coordinated by three phosphane and one chloro substituent… Show more

“…The coordination pattern of L 2 thus generally echoes the observations made previously with metal complexes of related ligands of tetrapodal topology . More specifically, it closely mimics the coordination chemistry of copper(II) complexes of such ligands ,,. EPR spectra obtained both from powder samples and frozen methanol solutions of [ L 2 CuCl]Cl at T= 150 K, are in agreement with this structure (Figures S9 and 10 in the Supporting Information).…”

“…In both cases, and within minutes, the reaction mixture deposited a blue precipitate, which was collected and recrystallized from methanol to obtain single crystals of 5 suitable for an X-ray structure determination ( Figure 3).
