A Test of Foliar-applied Systemic Insecticides to Prevent Damage to White Spruce Cones by Insects

Abstract: Cone-bearing portions of white spruce trees were sprayed by means of hydraulic sprayers with 1.0 and 1.5 per cent solutions of dimethoate, methomyl, and acephate in a 12-year-old and a 25-year-old plantation. Cone damage was reduced by insecticides but no differences between the two application rates were detected. In the younger plantation, each insecticide provided highly significant reductions in damage by spruce coneworm, spiral spruce cone maggot, and spruce cone-axis midge, but neither reduced spruce bud… Show more

“…Systemic insecticides that are effective as sprays against at least one targeted pest include the following: dimethoate on Douglas-fir (Hedlin 1966;Summers and Miller 1986;Summers and Ruth 1987), black spruce (Haig and McPhee 1969;Prkvost et al 1988), white spruce (Hedlin 1973;Fogal and Lopushanski 1985), and tamarack (Arnirault and Brown 1986); oxydemeton-methyl on Douglas-fir (Hedlin 1966;Summers and Miller 1986) and white spruce (Hedlin 1973;Fogal and Lopushanski 1985); bidrin on Douglas-fir (Hedlin 1973); and methomyl (Fogal and Lopushanski 1985) and formothion (Hedlin 1973) on white spruce. Acephate gave inconsistent results on Douglasfir from year to year (Summers and Miller 1986).…”
