This Progress Report provides a brief overview of current research activities in the field of one‐dimensional (1D) conducting polymer nanostructures. The synthesis, properties, and applications of these materials are outlined with a strong emphasis on recent literature examples. Chemical methods that can produce 1D nanostructures in bulk quantities are discussed in the context of two different strategies: 1) procedures that rely on a nanoscale template or additive not inherent to the polymer and 2) those that do not. The different sub‐classifications of these two strategies are delineated and the virtues and vices of each area are discussed. Following this discussion is an outline of the properties and applications of 1D conducting polymer nanostructures. This section focuses on applications in which nanostructured conducting polymers are clearly advantageous over their conventional counterparts. We conclude with our perspective on the main challenges and future research directions for this new class of nanomaterials. This Progress Report is not intended as a comprehensive review of the field, but rather a summary of select contributions that we feel will provide the reader with a strong basis for further investigation into this fast emerging field.

A thin film sensor for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC) was fabricated by deposition of oligo-aniline grafted tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) onto a glass substrate. The oligo-aniline motifs were conjugated onto the TMV surface by a traditional diazonium coupling reaction to tyrosine residues followed by Cu(I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The modified TMV was easily fabricated into a thin film by directly drop coating onto a glass substrate. Upon integration of the glass substrate into a prototypical device, the virus-based thin film exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity toward ethanol and methanol vapour.

M A N U S C R I P T A C C E P T E D ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to show that it is possible to increase the diameter and the length of the nanostructures of a framework formed of oriented polypyrrole nanowires that has been prepared by a templateless electrochemical method based on the use of a pyrrole solution containing a high concentration of weak-acid anion and a low concentration of non-acidic anion. The dimensions of the initial nanowires are increased by performing an additional electrosynthesis in a 'classical' monomer solution. Depending on the polarization time of this last synthesis (a few tens of seconds), wires with various diameters, from one hundred up to several hundred nanometers, are obtained. In addition to the variation of the nanowire size, these findings confirm, as outlined in the reaction mechanism we have proposed, that the base of the nanowires is surrounded by a thin non-conductive polymer i.e. by an overoxidized polypyrrole film. Actually this paper shows a proof-of-concept. Indeed one can imagine that the second polymeric electrodeposit could be performed using an organic monomer solution, using functionalized pyrrole monomer to fabricate a biosensor having large specific area, and/or using anions which could be drugs.
