A Template‐Free Route to Polypyrrole Nanofibers

Abstract: A template‐free method for the production of polypyrrole nanofibers is presented. By adding a small amount of bipyrrole into the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, a drastic change in the morphology of the observed material is observed from large, granular particles to nanofibrils with an average diameter of 20 nm. This simple procedure allows for the production of polypyrrole nanofibers without the presence of surfactants or other structural directing agents. The polypyrrole nanofibers can form stable water… Show more

“…Using this general concept, nanofibers of substituted PAni, PPy, and PTh have been produced. [77,78,88,89] These results highlight the importance of oligomers in guiding the size and shape of conducting polymer particles, since it is the oligomer aggregates that are believed to guide nanofiber formation. [78] In fact, the addition of oligomers also appears important to the formation of chiral conducting polymer nanofibers.…”

“…Recently, the production of nanofibers of conducting polymers besides PAni has been achieved without the use of any external additives not inherent to the polymer. [77,78,89,90] This is accomplished by adding a small amount of an oligomer into the conventional syntheses of substituted PAni, PPy, or PTh. For example, when a solution of pyrrole and bipyrrole in methanol is reacted with a solution of FeCl 3 in water, the resulting purified polymer possesses a nanofibrillar morphology (Fig.…”

“…However It has also been established that polypyrrole nanostructures can also be prepared without the use of any template [20][21][22][23][24]. Notably In that respect, in our previous works [25][26][27], we brought to light that different polypyrrole nanostructures can be synthesized by using a one-step electrochemical synthesis, without using any template.…”
