ABSTRACT:In this study, Polypropylene (PP) plastics waste with various concentrations of 0.5%, 0.8%, and 1% were investigated to substitute bitumen's mass. The mixing of plastics and asphalt was conducted by wet method, which added PP plastic into the asphalt when being heated so it produced a homogeneous mixture. Then, AC-WC mixture was made with bitumen contents of 5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5%, and 7%. Each mixture was carried out in triplicate for every plastic's concentrations. Five parameters of mixtures were tested by Marshall Method, as follows: VIM, VMA, VFA, stability, and flow. Then, all the parameters were plotted in bar chart to determine an OBC (optimum bitumen content). Changes in rheological properties after the addition of PP plastics occurs which indicates the increasing of viscosity, softening point, flash point, and the decreasing of density, penetration and solubility. Based on Marshall Test, the OBC for asphalt pen 60/70 was 5.4% while the OBC with PP plastic content of 0.5%, 0.8% and 1%, consecutively, were 5.41%, 5.43% and 5.45%. Despite the increasing of OBC, this substitution of bitumen to plastics has some advantages such as increasing stability and remaining strength index (RSI), reducing plastic waste generation and asphalt cost. However, it has disadvantages such as it consumes more energy and it increases gas emission.

ABSTRACT:This study examines properties of waste plastic water bottles, polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The waste polymer was added to the normal bitumen penetration grade (80/100) prepared Marshall Samples using ACW-14 to investigate Marshall Parameters of polymer modified bitumen and compare with conventional bitumen. Thermal analysis of PET waste polymer was carried out using TGA and DSC to study decomposition and melting temperature of the waste polymer and also select suitable type of polymer because compatibility of the material is an essential. Basic penetration, softening point, ductility test was performed and study finding shows that penetration and ductility decrease while softening point increase by addition of polymers. Marshall analysis of the study found that by addition of 9% polymers to the bitumen by weight of 5.5% at optimum level increase Marshall properties and give all positive response for polymers PET such as stability increase up to 60-70%, stiffness, flow, density and voids of the polymer modified bitumen found positively improving and enhancement was observed compared to conventional, which is the key objective of this study. In conclusion the polymers modified bitumen improves stability, workability and reduce deformation in road pavement.

Abstract:In this paper, the welded tuff waste-known as koyke in Isparta regionwas used in the hot mix asphalt (HMA) as mineral filler for reduction of the moisture susceptibility of HMA. Optimum binder content was assessed with Marshall Design Method. First of all, welded tuff was substituted as filler with limestone filler in proportion of 50% and 100%. After that Marshall Stability test was performed on specimens. The results showed that the 50% substitution was more effective than the 100% substitution. Therefore, welded tuff was substituted with limestone filler in proportion of 25%, 50%, 65% and 75%. Next, Indirect Tensile Strength test was practiced on the fabricated specimens and the results were assessed. According to the Indirect Tensile Strength results, welded tuff with 65% was given higher strength than the limestone filler. As a result, it has come up that welded tuff can be used as mineral filler in the hot mix asphalt.
