In this study, we present the experimental results demonstrating the functionality of our recently developed “balancing device” for walking restoration in patients with spinal cord injuries. Since we are preparing this device for testing on dogs, we program the analytical core of the device to recognize both stance and swing phases of the dog gait, the direction that the dog is falling, as well as selecting a suitable balancing strategy to prevent falling. The analytical core of the device is a commercial microcontroller, the Teensy, which is able to provide suitable stimulation commands and intensities as a voltage for delivery to the stimulation circuit and target muscles. We show the functional schematic of the device along with experimental results obtained by testing the device in a simulated robotic dog. Results show that the sensory system of the animal lost by spinal cord injury can be replaced by the sensing core of the device and the analytical core can provide appropriate stimulation control to balance the body of a dog. All test results are obtained using our robot test-bed and living animals are not involved in this study.

At present, complex electromechanical systems are widely used in modern society. By evaluating complex electromechanical systems, it is of great value to improve and upgrade them. Given the complex and interrelated characteristics of performance indicators, this paper establishes the performance evaluation indicator system of a complex electromechanical system, proposes to calculate the weight of each indicator by an improved analytic hierarchy process, revises the indicator weight by entropy weight method, and then adopts fuzzy synthesis evaluation method to evaluate the comprehensive effectiveness of a complex electromechanical system quantitatively. Through the example analysis, it is proved that this method provides an effective way for the effectiveness evaluation of complex electromechanical systems.

In this paper, shape memory polymers (SMPs) are fabricated by blending Polyurethane (PU) and Polycaprolactone (PCL). A novel method is used to make tubular stents using this blend. The solution coating method is applied to fabricate the SMP stent samples with a non-groove structure. Some metallic commercial stents made of the platinum-chromium alloy are used to compare SMP stents’ the mechanical properties with metal ones. According to the stents’ functionality, two mechanical tests, i.e., radial compression and three-point bending, are conducted in a range of body temperature. According to the mechanical test results, the tubular polymer stent shows a lower strength under the radial forces and a higher strength under the bending forces than to their metal counterparts. However, the mechanical properties of the SMP stents are in the range of metal stents. Thus, the PU/PCL SMP blend can be a promising candidate to be used as the coronary artery stents.
