A Technical and Economic Study of Completion Techniques in Five Emerging US Gas Shales

Abstract: With the increased demand for energy and the declining conventional hydrocarbons worldwide, energy companies are turning to unconventional resources, such as shale gas. With over 2, 000 TCF gas in place indentified in just 5 shale gas plays in the United States, shale gas formations are now the number one targets for exploration drilling. Furthermore, there are still many more major shale gas plays and basins waiting to be explored, evaluated and developed. Because of the extremely low permeability of most sha… Show more

“…Based on experience with US shale plays and un-published material supported by best practices followed by the shale exploitation experts, along with the published data whose references ([2] to [12]), have been cited towards the end, a comprehensive sequence of Shale exploitation has been developed to summarize most of the critical decision making factors involved in un-taping these reserves. This work is applicable to any shale reservoir in the world, though the sequence might slightly vary from play to play.…”
