Supporting transfer students in the geosciences from two‐year colleges to university programs

“…Another important aspect to LBOS Geobridge was a summer–fall term collaborative research project at OSU. Examples include mineral separation and geochronological analysis at the OSU Argon Geochronology lab, development of laboratory protocols to enable the U‐series disequilibria dating of geological and biological samples using plasma spectrometry (Lewis et al., 2018), and collection and analysis of oxygen isotopes from natural waters in the local Marys River watershed. In all of these projects, students worked together as a team in data collection, sample processing, and science communication at a professional meeting or an undergraduate research symposium at OSU.…”

“…Programming and activities helped build a cohort that supports each other through the academic, social, and institutional challenges that many transfer students face (Fink & Jenkins, 2017; Wang et al., 2017; Wolfe, 2018). Each summer, students conducted a group research project based out of a College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) analytical laboratory at OSU supervised by a lab mentor (Lewis et al., 2018). Students also participated in a four‐day summer field mapping project led by LBCC and OSU faculty that was designed to help prepare students with skills to be successful in their first, upper‐division geoscience course at OSU, GEO 295–Introduction to Field Methods.…”
