A Taxonomy of Manufacturing Strategies

Abstract: This paper describes the development and analysis of a numerical taxonomy of manufacturing strategies. The taxonomy was developed with standard methods of cluster analysis, and is based on the relative importance attached to eleven competitive capabilities defining the manufacturing task of 164 large American manufacturing business units. Three distinct clusters of manufacturing strategy groups were observed. Though there is an industry effect, all three manufacturing strategy types are observed in various ind… Show more

“…This had to be someone in the first-tier supplier company with knowledge of both direct customer pressures and the implementation of socially responsible procurement practices. Miller and Roth (1994) suggest that this attention to informant selection assists in overcoming common method variance.…”

“…We chose to administer the survey by telephone as this ensures rapid data collection (Forza 2002), maximizes response rates and helps guarantee access to the expert in the organization (Miller and Roth 1994). Additionally, the purpose of the survey can be reiterated through an opening statement ensuring that questions are answered by the appropriately identified respondent and that instructions are followed (Forza 2002).…”

“…A response rate above 40 per cent is often considered necessary (Flynn et al, 1990), even though much recent empirical research in manufacturing shows lower response rates (e.g. Miller and Roth, 1994;Vickery et al, 1993) Instrument and data analysis The respondents from different industry sectors were grouped according to their size (number of employees). This resulted in a total of 18 groups of with the TPM philosophy.…”

“…Consistent with the literature in operations management, the configurations identified through fsQCA are equifinal in the sense that they represent equally plausible pathways to high profitability as a measure of firm performance. However, while equally plausible and equifinal in that respect, their contributions to firm performance do differ, with configuration 1 being the most impactful for 2013 (time t) and configuration 3 the least (as indicated by the decreasing magnitudes of the 'raw coverage' values across the three configurations in Table IV This supports the view that manufacturing strategy is a pattern of manufacturing choices (Miller and Roth, 1994), but extends this thinking by addressing the failure of manufacturing studies particularly to apply RBT as a theoretical framework capable of explaining the relationship between resources and performance (Ordanini and Rubera 2008;Mills et al, 2003). Recent notable applications are shedding light on the role of resources (e.g., Chatha and Butt, 2015;Lewis et al, 2010;Mirzaei et al, 2016).…”
