A Taxonomy of Industry 4.0 and Related Technologies

Abstract: Industry 4.0 and related technologies will remain at the top agenda of manufacturing systems until respective digital transformation is completed. In order to increase the speed of the transformation and the respective performance, a taxonomy of industry 4.0 is proposed in this chapter. The taxonomy is defined through four aspects including strategic understanding, managerial practices, technological infrastructure and developments, as well as human intervention with respective skills and competencies. Each as… Show more

“…it is observed that aspects such as strategic, managerial, technical, and human intervention points of view permeate. Oztemel and Gursev (2020) mention that the integration of the elements of Industry 4.0 is done horizontally (through all participants in the entire value chain) and vertically (in all automation levels) of a given company as a whole. The dimensions shown in Table 1 contextualize vertical integration which aspects of the Organization, personnel, machines, processes, and products are taken.…”

“…While browsing the available publications, we notice that some researchers had focused on creating taxonomies for Industry 4.0 technologies that supported the digital transformation and industrial needs [ 10 , 11 ]. Some researchers studied business use cases or consulted company reports and white papers [ 12 ].…”

“…This is because by using advanced Artificial Intelligent (AI) methods to predict disruptions in the functioning of technical systems, predictive maintenance enables the minimization of downtime, prolonging machine life, increasing production efficiency, resource utilization, and reducing costs [3][4][5]. There is no common definition of Maintenance 4.0 or Industry 4.0, however, a number of studies undertaking these issues are growing rapidly and are also witnessed by many taxonomies of problems identified in both these areas, which presented, inter alia, in the works [2, [6][7][8].…”
