A taxonomic revision of the Nematotaeniidae Lhe, 1910 (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea)

Abstract: A taxonomic revision of the Nematotaeniidae, involving the examination of over 400 specimens, was undertaken. Some new taxonomic characters have been introduced to allow distinction of the various species. The family contains 18 recognized species in four genera. The genus Nematotaenia Liihe, 1910 contains four species, namely N.

“…Nematodes were cleared in glycerine or lactophenol, and examined as temporary mounts. Helminths were identified using Yamaguti (1961Yamaguti ( , 1963Yamaguti ( , 1975, Jones (1987), Anderson (2000), Gibson et al (2002), and Jones et al (2005). Specimens of various parasite species were deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Centro de Ecología Aplicada del Litoral (CECOAL-CONICET), Corrientes City, Corrientes, Argentina (see Table 2).…”

“…This would further suggest that the initial diversification of cyclophyllideans occurred in now extinct terrestrial saurians or synapsids during the early Mesozoic, with colonisation or co-evolution in early mammals and colonisation of amphibians after 225 mybp (see Dingus & Rowe, 1998). In this context, the basal cyclophyllideans are represented by the Mesocestoididae + Nematotaeniidae Lühe, 1910, the latter group having radi-ated in gondwanan anurans 180-200 mybp (Jones, 1987;. Consequently, the current distribution of these tapeworm taxa may be, in part, related to patterns of colonisation of mammals and birds and extinction of ancestral host lineages during the Mesozoic (Spasskii, 1993a,b;.…”

“…Cylindrotaenia allisonae was originally described from a single specimen taken from the intestine of the spotted sticky-toed gecko, Hoplodactylus maculatus Boulenger, 1885 collected on Stephens Island, New Zealand (Schmidt, 1980). It has been reported from H. maculatus from Ward Island and Turakirae, New Zealand, Bynoe's gecko, Heteronotia binoei (Gray, 1845) and the yellowbelly skink, Hemiergis peronii (Gray, 1831) from Australia, and L. lugubris from Hawaii and Rota (Jones, 1987;Goldberg and Bursey, 1997;Goldberg et al, 1998 ). Cylindrotaenia allisonae is a member of the Nematotaeniidae which are considered by Joyeux ( 1927) Oochoristica javaensis was originally described from G. mutilata, the Asian house gecko, Cosymbotus platyurus (Schneider, 1792) and H. frenatus collected in Java, Indonesia ( Kennedy et al, 1982).…”
