A taxonomic guide to modern benthic shelf foraminifera of the western Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: A total of 288 modern benthic carbonate shelf foraminifera in three areas of the Western Mediterranean Sea (Alboran Platform, Oran Bight and the southwest shelf of Mallorca) have been studied and are systematically listed. This systematic description provides a list of synonyms, short remarks about morphological features of the taxa and some annotations about taxa with problematic generic status. Most of the taxa are illustrated by SEM photographs.

“…(), Jorissen (), Athersuch et al . (), Sgarrella & Moncharmont Zei (), Fiorini & Vaiani () and Milker & Schmiedl (). Palaeoenvironmental interpretations of microfossil assemblages are supported by the recent distribution of taxa in the Northern Adriatic Sea (Colalongo, ; D'Onofrio, ; Breman, ; Jorissen, ; Donnici & Serandrei Barbero, ) and by comparison with assemblages from other Holocene coastal to shallow‐marine successions of the Mediterranean area (e.g.…”

“…Nevertheless, species characterizing a low food environment like G. charoides and G. orbicularis are more abundant in eastern part than the western. The shelf assemblage is more diverse and consists mainly of Ammonia beccarii, Elphidium lidoense, Elphidium granosum, Textularia pseudogramen, Textularia sagittula, Bolivina spathulata, Bolivina dilatata, Cassidulina crassa, Cassidulina levigata/ carinata, Haplophragmoides membranaceum, Gavelinopsis praegeri, Bigenerina nodosaria, Trifarina angulosa and Bulimina marginata Mojtahid et al, 2009;Milker and Schmiedl, 2012).…”

“…Benthic foraminifera and ostracod assemblages, which have a high sensitivity to environmental change, were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively (Aiello, Barra, De Pippo, Donadio, & Petrosino, ; Aiello, Barra, De Pippo, & Donadio, ; D'Amico et al, ; Stamatopoulos et al ; Balassone et al, ; Mangoni et al, ; Marino et al ). Benthic foraminifera and ostracod taxa were collected from sediment samples washed through a 125 µm sieve and identified according to the modern and classic literature, with a specific focus on the Mediterranean area (Müller, ; Barbeito‐Gonzalez, ; Bonaduce, Ciampo, & Masoli, ; Breman, ; Sen Gupta, Smith, & Machain‐Castillo, ; Aiello & Barra, ; Debenay, ; Milker & Schmiedl, ; Aiello, Barra, & Parisi, ; Aiello, Barra, Parisi, Isaia, & Marturano, ). A total of 42 benthic foraminiferal and 59 ostracod species were identified and the studied specimens are now housed in the Aiello Barra Micropaleontological Collection (A.B.M.P.)…”
