A Tale of Shaheen’s Cyclone Consequences in Al Khaboura City, Oman

Abstract: Natural hazards due to climate change have become the new norm in our cities. These events show the vulnerabilities of our cities to extreme conditions, mainly displayed as flash wadi flooding as a result of a short duration of intensive and eroded its shoreline along the coast, resulting in huge impacts, including human losses and urban and infrastructural damages. This study used the urban flood risk mitigation model through an open-source tool—Integrated Evaluation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-off (InVES… Show more

“…In the pluvial assessment of urban flood risk, this study employs the inVEST Urban Flood Risk Mitigation (UFRM) model to evaluate runoff generation and retention at the catchment scale. The UFRM model, previously applied in diverse global contexts ranging from Europe [50,51] to the Middle East [52,53] and Southern Asia [54,55], was pivotal in the Ile-de-France Evaluation Services Ecosystemiques (IDEFESE) project. This initiative, spearheaded by various French national institutions, sought to discern the protective role of ecosystems against flood risk across Paris, thereby informing future urban planning strategies [56].…”

“…Similarly to Gonu, it charted an unusual path, from east to west, at the northernmost regions of the Arabian Sea, very close to the Iranian coastline. Eventually, this cyclone entered the Gulf of Oman and made its landfall on the shoreline of Al Khaburah in northern Oman, classified as a category 1 intensity cyclone on 3 October 2021 [12]. Coastal towns such as Al Suwayq and Saham were severely affected by a combination of storm surges and flash flooding.…”
