A Tailored Intervention for PAP Adherence: The SCIP-PA Trial

Abstract: Objective/Background Positive airway pressure (PAP) is highly efficacious treatment but non-adherence is prevalent with little improvement over the last 15 years. Tailored interventions show promise for promoting adherence to other treatments. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility/acceptability of a tailored intervention to promote PAP adherence. Participants Convenience sample met inclusion criteria: newly-diagnosed OSA; treatment-naïve; ≥18 years. Exclusion criteria: previous OSA diagn… Show more

“…Our findings may have clinical and policy implications. Similar to research on other health conditions [ 62 , 63 , 64 ], we recommend that DM interventions should be tailored by race and gender [ 63 , 65 , 66 ]. This is especially important as minority populations may be more receptive to programs and interventions that are tailored to their specific needs.…”

“…Participants were categorized into 4 groups based on whether they had high or low efficacy and threat perceptions (ie, responsive, avoidance, proactive, and indifference). As stated earlier, an average score of 3 was used as a critical indicator threshold to dichotomize the responses into high and low following Sawyer et al [ 51 ], with a score >3 being high and all others being classified as low. The indifference group had all women, only the responsive group had nonwhites, and only the proactive group had participants who were aged 65 years.…”

“…Perceived threat was operationalized as the sum of the mean score of perceived severity and the mean score of perceived susceptibility as they are both considered as dimensions of the threat construct [ 11 ]. Sawyer and King [ 51 ] used the Self-Efficacy Measure for Sleep Apnea (SEMSA) with a score of 3 for each subscale as a critical indicator for tailoring an intervention. Thus, an average score of 3 was used as the critical indicator threshold to dichotomize the responses into high and low, with a score >3 being high and all others being classified as low.…”

“…Greater success has been described with cognitive behavioural or motivational strategies in improving adherence . These behavioural strategies again recognize the psychosocial influences on PAP adherence.…”

“…Greater success has been described with cognitive behavioural or motivational strategies in improving adherence. 35,[45][46][47][48][49][50][51] These behavioural strategies again recognize the psychosocial influences on PAP adherence. In a meta-analysis assessing the effectiveness of educational, supportive or behavioural strategies in encouraging CPAP use, most studies incorporated elements of more than one intervention.…”
