A Tailgut Cyst—Cystic Mass Diagnosed by Prenatal Ultrasonography

Abstract: Tailgut cysts are congenital lesions found in the presacral space. These have been mainly identified in adults and are rare in children, especially neonates. Here, we present the case of a neonate with a presacral cystic mass detected by prenatal ultrasonography that was diagnosed as a tailgut cyst after postnatal surgical removal. When a presacral cyst is encountered, tailgut cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

“…[ 3 4 5 6 ] Although the preoperative clinical diagnosis is difficult, modern methods of imaging in suspected cases will help to clinch the diagnosis and planning for definitive surgical management which will further avoid complications in future. [ 7 8 9 ] There is always a risk of malignancy in such a mass as a result of late recognition and inadequate surgical excision. [ 10 ] This case report of tailgut cyst in an 18-year female may provide some literature review to clarify a case of a rare tumor and its surgical approach.…”
