A T-shaped piezoelectric cantilever for fluid energy harvesting

Abstract: This paper proposes a T-shaped piezoelectric cantilever for generating electric power from fluid flow. The working principle of the device is based on aeroelastic flutter and utilizes a bimorph cantilever with T-shape which hastens occurrence of flutter at a low fluid speed. A prototype device (100×60×30 mm3) was tested in a wind tunnel. The device was found to provide power from a wind speed of 4 m/s and a continuous peak electrical power output of 4.0 mW. The simplicity of the present device consisting of on… Show more

“…Consequently, it was determined that the onset speed of galloping is 0.4 m/s. This speed is smaller than those reported in the literature (e.g., 2.5 m/s in Yang et al, 24 8 mph (3.57 m/s) in Sirohi and Mahdik, 18 and 4 m/s in Kwon 25 ).…”

“…Piezoelectric harvesters show a distinctly promising scalability. Last year's research results show a focusing towards at least two piezoelectric materials: PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) [5,6] and PVDF [4,8,9]. PVDF has much lower piezoelectric coefficients than PZT and let expect relatively low converted power.…”
