A Systems-Biology Approach to Yeast Actin Cables

Abstract: We focus on actin cables in yeast as a model system for understanding cytoskeletal organization and the workings of actin itself. In particular, we highlight quantitative approaches on the kinetics of actin cable assembly and methods of measuring their morphology by image analysis. Actin cables described by these studies can span greater lengths than a thousand end-to-end actin monomers. Because of this difference in length scales, control of the actin-cable system constitutes a junction between short-range in… Show more

“…Fission and budding yeast contain however two types of actin structures in interphase: actin cables and actin patches, both of which are present in images where actin filaments are marked by GFP-CHD, an actin filament side-binding protein 37 . Eliminating the actin patches with the drug CK-666 ( Fig.…”

“…Actin cables are highly dynamic structures with a halflife of less than a minute Drake et al, 2012). Of the three F-actin structures assembled in yeast, actin cables are relatively less well understood probably because they are highly dynamic and are relatively difficult to image in real time.…”

“…Also, very little is known about how the assembly, growth, and disassembly of actin cables may be controlled. Although recent studies involving advanced cellular, genomic, and mathematical modeling techniques are beginning to shed light on the assembly and dynamics of actin cables (Martin, ; Kovar et al ., ; Yu et al ., ; Drake et al ., ), a significant amount of work is required to generate a comprehensive understanding of the assembly and dynamics of actin cables.…”

“…Some of the key features of a pandemic are its wide geographic extension, swift disease movement, novelty, severity, high attack rates and explosiveness, minimal population immunity, infectiousness and contagiousness (Gewald 2007). Therefore, a pandemic is categorised as trans-regional and global (Taubenberger & Morens 2009) and has the capacity to threaten all aspects of the economic and social fabric (Drake et al 2012). This study presents the historical background of sports during the Spanish Influenza pandemic.…”
